🎬🇸🇮 Slovenian Film at Pristava Summer Camp

The Consulate General was pleased to partner with the Slovenski filmski center / Slovenian Film Centre to bring the beautifully restored Slovenian classic *Poletje v školjki* (Summer in a Seashell) to the children attending the Slovenska Pristava Summer Camp.

Set in the picturesque coastal town of Piran, the film has introduced generations of Slovenians to the beauty of the Slovenian coast and continues to captivate audiences with its timeless story.
We hope the screening offered campers a memorable connection to Slovenia's language, culture, and cinematic heritage.

We are so thankful to the America250-Ohio for the support and collaboration on this amazing project!

Today, on what would have been George Voinovich's 90th birthday, we remember a leader whose belief in public service, collaboration, and bringing people together helped shape Ohio for generations.

A celebration of that legacy will continue through the traveling exhibition "Together We Can Do It!", based upon the exhibition at Slovenian Museum and Archives / Slovenski muzej in arhiv exploring Voinovich's life, leadership, and lasting impact.

George Voinovich was only the second person to be Mayor of Cleveland, Governor of Ohio, and U.S. Senator. The first was Frank Lausche, another Slovenian-American.

Beginning this fall, "Together We Can Do It!" will travel to of Cleveland - City Hall, the Ohio Statehouse, and Ohio University's Libraries Archives & Special Collections giving Ohioans across the state the opportunity to experience this remarkable story.

We're proud to help share this exhibition as part of America's 250th anniversary year in Ohio.

The Consulate was pleased to participate in this year's Slovenefest at the SNPJ (Slovene National Benefit Society) Recreation Center in the Borough of SNPJ, Pennsylvania, where we welcomed visitors at our information stand and provided information about Slovenia, its culture, tourism, and consular services.

Slovenefest continues to be an important celebration of Slovenian heritage in the United States, bringing together the Slovenian-American community and all those interested in Slovenia.
Visitors enjoyed a rich program featuring Slovenian music, traditional cuisine, cultural and craft demonstrations, genealogy presentations, and culinary workshops, including the preparation of the beloved Blejska kremšnita.

The festival also honors the legacy of the many Slovenian immigrants whose courage, hard work, and commitment helped build vibrant Slovenian communities in the United States with a dedicated Heritage Center onsight.

It was a pleasure to meet so many members of the Slovenian-American community, exchange experiences, and celebrate our shared heritage together.

City of Joliet recognizing 100 years of SLOVENIAN UNION OF AMERICA

During the City Council Meeting on July 7, 2026, Mayor Terry D'Arcy and the Joliet City Council issued a proclamation recognizing the National Board of Directors and the members of the Slovenian Union of America. This year marks the 100th anniversary of their Union and the 50th anniversary of their Joliet home office!

Since 1926, they have been dedicated to educating members and the public about the history of Slovenians and Slovenian-Americans and their rich contributions to America.

Drop by and celebrate local history! Their home office is located in the historic 1910 Stonich Building (431 N. Chicago St.) and features a beautiful Slovenian Heritage Museum and Library.

🇸🇮🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day, America! 🇺🇸🇸🇮

On this Fourth of July, the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland extends warm wishes to all our American friends, partners, and the vibrant Slovenian-American community. As we celebrate the enduring friendship between Slovenia and the United States, we also reflect on a unique piece of Slovenian-American heritage found right here in downtown Cleveland.

Located on Cleveland's Mall, near the Frank J. Lausche State Office Building, this plaque was dedicated during the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976 by the Slovenian-American Heritage Foundation. It reproduces remarks delivered by U.S. Senator Frank J. Lausche on November 28, 1967. Lausche, the son of Slovenian immigrants and one of Ohio's most distinguished public servants, proudly highlighted the contributions of Slovenian Americans to the United States.

The plaque commemorates an intriguing historical theory that Thomas Jefferson, while studying Jean Bodin's Republic, may have encountered descriptions of the ancient Installation of the Dukes of Carinthia—a medieval Slovene political tradition emphasizing that authority derives from the consent of the people. Although historians continue to debate the extent of this influence, the theory points to a remarkable connection between Slovenian political traditions and the democratic ideals that shaped the United States.

The idea was first advanced by Dr. Jožef Felicijan, a Slovenian immigrant, historian, and educator in Cleveland, whose research in the 1960s explored possible links between the Carantanian tradition and Jefferson's political thought. His work inspired renewed interest in Slovenia's early democratic heritage and its place in the broader history of democratic ideas.

Whether viewed as historical influence or shared democratic values, the plaque serves as a lasting reminder of the rich Slovenian-American legacy in Cleveland and the enduring ties between our two nations.
