Last Sunday, over 1,300 people gathered on the St. Clair River to drift along on innertubes, inflatables, and other makeshift rafts during the annual Port Huron Float Down. Our Coast Guard crews from Station Port Huron, Sector Detroit, and Air Station Detroit worked tirelessly to enforce a safety zone and keep participants safe during the unsanctioned event.
Working alongside the Canadian Coast Guard, US Border Patrol, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, Port Huron Police Department and Fire Department, and many other partners, our crews assisted or rescued 265 individuals, many of whom had fallen off their inflatables and were struggling in the water. Two of the lives saved were near-drownings, underscoring the risks inherent in events like Float Down.
In addition, to protect the shared waterway and secure the maritime border, the Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Mounted Police conducted 13 shiprider boardings under the Integrated Cross-Border Maritime Law Enforcement program.
Events like this highlight the critical need for preparation. For those planning to float, raft, or kayak on the Great Lakes or local rivers this weekend, remember to wear a life jacket, bring a paddle, file a float plan, dress appropriately, and avoid consuming alcohol.
