🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE BE AWARE 🚨

The Maple Heights Police Department is alerting residents to two separate incidents involving individuals going door-to-door who are not affiliated with the City of Maple Heights.

🏠 Scam #1 – Impersonating City Employees

We have received reports of a female going door-to-door claiming to be with the City Building Department and asking questions regarding the occupancy of residences. The individual has been reported driving a blue Toyota RAV4.

🏡 Scam #2 – Roof Inspection Solicitation

We have also received reports of an individual going door-to-door asking to inspect residential roofs. This individual is not a City employee and is not affiliated with the City of Maple Heights.

⚠️ Know How to Identify Legitimate City Employees:
✔️ They will wear an official City uniform.
✔️ They will carry a City-issued identification badge.
✔️ They will drive a clearly marked City vehicle.
✔️ The City of Maple Heights does not employ any female Code Enforcement Officers at this time. Our Code Enforcement staff currently consists of male officers only.

📋 Solicitor Reminder

Any individual or company conducting door-to-door solicitation within the City of Maple Heights is required to obtain a Solicitor's Permit issued by the Maple Heights Police Department before soliciting residents.

If someone comes to your door offering services or attempting to sell a product, don't hesitate to ask to see their Police Department-issued Solicitor's Permit. Legitimate solicitors should have the permit with them and be able to present it upon request at all times.

🚔 Protect Yourself
• Do not allow unknown individuals into your home.
• Always ask for official identification and, when applicable, a Police Department-issued Solicitor's Permit.
• Never feel pressured to provide personal information or agree to services on the spot.
• If something doesn't seem right, trust your instincts.
• If you observe suspicious activity or believe someone is impersonating a City employee, contact the Maple Heights Police Department immediately. If it is an emergency, call 911.

ANYONE THAT WAS EVACUATED, THE EVACUATION ORDER IS LIFTED AND MAY RETURN.

Honoring Sgt. Scott Ries, Christine McWilliams, and McKinley McWilliams

The Lorain Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Rittman Police Department, the family and friends of Sgt. Scott Ries, and everyone impacted by the tragic events in Rittman on July 5.

Sgt. Ries, a 10-year veteran of the Rittman Police Department, had his life taken in the line of duty while responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunfire. Officers arriving on scene came under immediate gunfire. Four other law enforcement officers and a police K-9 were also injured during the incident.

We also remember Christine McWilliams and her 13-year-old daughter, McKinley McWilliams, whose lives were also taken in this tragedy. Their families, friends, neighbors, and community are grieving an unimaginable loss.

This tragedy reaches far beyond one department. It is felt by every badge, every family, and every community that understands the weight carried by those who answer the call, and the heartbreak left behind when innocent lives are lost.

Here in Lorain, we know how deeply these moments affect an agency, a city, and the families who stand behind them.

Our thoughts are with Sgt. Ries’ loved ones, his fellow officers, the injured officers, the injured K-9, and the families of Christine and McKinley McWilliams. We stand with Rittman, Wayne County, Medina County, Hinckley, and all who are grieving this heartbreaking loss.

Rest easy, Sgt. Ries.
Christine and McKinley, you will not be forgotten.

Happy 250th 4th of July Maple!!
