On August 2, our Natural Resources Officers demonstrated exceptional vigilance and teamwork on Lake Erie.

While en route to Put In Bay for a fireworks detail, Officers Braun, Schloemer, and Hay spotted a kayaker in distress in strong north winds. They quickly located the overturned kayak, brought the individual aboard, and provided immediate first aid. The kayaker shared that three others had attempted to paddle from Middle Bass Island to Catawba Island.

About 15 minutes later, officers located a second kayaker and rescued him as well. After an hour of searching, it was confirmed that the remaining two paddlers had safely reached shore. The rescued individuals were transported to East Harbor State Park, where EMS treated them for hypothermia after nearly four hours in the water.

A heartfelt thank you to our Natural Resources Officers for their quick thinking, decisive action, and dedication to protecting Ohioans on the water. Their efforts — alongside support from the U.S. Coast Guard, Rescue Marine Towing, the Miller Ferry, and many good Samaritans — brought everyone home safely.

Safety Reminder:
Before heading out, always check weather conditions, wear a life jacket, file a float plan so someone knows your route and schedule, and avoid long crossings in high winds. Even experienced paddlers can encounter unexpected danger — stay alert and stay safe on the water.

NOTICE:

The United States Coast Guard is requesting public comment regarding changing the marine channel for contacting bridges on the Cuyahoga River and put out this statement:

“The Coast Guard is seeking information and comments on a proposed change to the operating regulation for all movable bridges over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, OH. The Cuyahoga River Harbor Safety Committee raised concerns to the Coast Guard regarding the radio frequency of the movable bridges and its interference with distress calls on VHF-FM Marine Channel 16 on 156.800 Megahertz. Currently, the Coast Guard's proposed solution to these issues would move the hailing channel for the bridges from VHF-FM Marine Channel 16 on 156.800 Megahertz to VHF-FM Marine Channel 9 on 156.450 Megahertz for all movable bridges over the Cuyahoga River. We invite your comments on this Notice of Inquiry.”
