Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈

This , we’re reflecting on the origins with the Stonewall uprising and looking at photos of historic gay and gay-friendly bars in Cleveland.

These images were never meant to celebrate q***r and trans life, as they were originally taken as official records for the Board of Zoning Appeals. For decades, cities nationwide weaponized zoning, licensing, and policing to control marginalized communities and restrict the right to assemble. Despite these barriers, the LGBTQ+ community consistently out-imagined rigid codes to create spaces for liberation.

However, early gay bars weren’t always welcoming to everyone; trans folks, people of color, and le****ns were frequently excluded, forcing them to build their own spaces and networks of support, some pictured here.

CHC029472: Leather Stallion Saloon - 2205 St. Clair Avenue (1992).

CHC051602: Jo-Ann's Nite Club- 1632 Payne Avenue (1960).

CHC017227: Adele’s Lounge Bar - 11605 Euclid Avenue (1967).

CHC021143: The Fish Bowl - 9110 Kinsman Avenue (1972).

CHC006454: The Hawk - 11217 Detroit Road (1988).

CHC029465: Porky’s - 1946 St. Claire Avenue (1985).

CHC031712: Bayou Landing - 1012 Sumner Avenue (1975).
