The City of Clifton mourns the passing of Councilman William “Bill” Gibson, a lifelong Clifton resident and dedicated public servant who devoted more than 50 years of his life to serving our community.
Bill passed away this morning at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Clifton.
Bill began his career serving the city as an animal control officer before joining the Clifton Police Department, where he proudly served for 30 years. Even after battling and beating cancer and enduring significant health challenges, Bill’s dedication to public service never wavered. Following his retirement from the police department in 2011, he continued answering the call to serve by being elected to the Clifton City Council in 2014, where he faithfully represented residents for the past 12 years.
Mayor Raymond Grabowski, who knew Bill for more than five decades, reflected on their lifelong friendship and Bill’s lasting impact on the community:
“Bill was more than a colleague — he was a lifelong friend. We grew up together, went to school together, and shared more than 50 years of friendship. He truly embodied what it meant to be a Cliftonite. Bill loved this city with all his heart and dedicated his life to serving its people. His strength, resilience, and kindness touched so many lives, and his absence will be deeply felt throughout our community.”
Councilman Gibson’s legacy of service and love for Clifton will never be forgotten.
The City of Clifton extends its deepest condolences to the Gibson family, his friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. 💙
