SCAM ALERT
Yesterday we received a call from an individual who claimed that their computer showed a pop up that claimed they had a virus on their computer and to call a number. When they called they were told that for $25,000 they could have their computer fixed.
This person went to their local bank and withdrew $25,000 cash. A male showed up in Clifton and met the woman at an undisclosed location to collect the money.
After the interaction, the woman felt something wasn't right and contacted police. We were given a license plate number and were able to get a hit from a Flock camera in Hillsboro, showing that the vehicle was currently in that area.
Hillsboro PD was contacted and stopped the vehicle for us. Clifton Officers went to the location of the stop and after a search of the vehicle, were able to find and recover the $25,000 in cash.
The suspect was identified as 26 year old Anson Zhou. He is not local to this area, and was just preying on the older members of our community.
We remind everyone to please be aware that these scams are happening. This case worked out well but they don't always work that way. If somebody asks you for cash or gift cards in return for some work that you didn't ask for, please contact us.
This is the second such case involving a subject who matched this persons description. The first victim did not have any information to give us and lost $30,000.
Great work by Sgt. Trevlyn Winder and Officer Raymond Lazard in getting this case solved so quickly. Also thank you to Sgt. Tyler Shaw with Bosque SO and Hillsboro PD for their assistance. The money had been recovered within an hour of us receiving the call.
There are many conversations about Flock cameras and how they are used. Just this calendar year Clifton PD has solved 4 cases using this photo technology. Without it, this woman's money would have never been recovered.
