Join our Fall Reading Challenge and travel through time with your favorite genre! Do you like westerns, mysteries, romance or horror novels? Just tell us your preferred genre and we’ll select three books for you, each from a different decade: the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s. We can send you a cartridge with the books or provide the DB numbers so you can download them yourself. Call us when you finish a book, or when you finish all three, and we’ll enter you in a drawing for one of two gift cards. The challenge ends Friday, December 11. Names will be drawn on Monday, December 14. Call us at 586-286-1580 to join!

Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15-October 15. This date was chosen to honor the five Central American nations that became independent from Spain on September 15th and Mexican Independence Day, observed on September 16th. Happy Labor Day! MLBPD is closed today, but if you’d like to learn more about the history of the labor movement in the United States, the National Library Service has many great books on this topic. One to try is There is Power in a Union: The epic story of labor in America by Philip Dray (DB 78450). This book begins with the worker actions at the Massachusetts textile mills in the late 19th century and takes readers through major and lesser-known events up to the 1980’s. The focus on colorful characters in the labor movement keeps this comprehensive and well-researched book lively. Call us at 586-286-1580 if you’d like assistance accessing this book or others.
