LOOKING BACK IN CLINTON MAINE!

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE.
In 1940 the number of students in grades1 through 12,we're all housed in the school building on Baker Street. The school had reached 250 and was anticipated to grow. The citizens realized the need for more classroom space.,and at a town meeting in March they had voted to build a new school. In September of 1940 grades 1through 4 started school in Clinton Elementary School on Morrison Avenue.
Construction began in 1949 to add four more rooms, and in January of 1950,the fifth grade was moved from the Baker Street building to the Morrison Ave facility.
The completion of the addition proved to be a slow process. In 1952 some two year's later the
Sixth graders moved to the school on Morrison Ave. As a result of a affirmative vote at the town meeting in March of 1959,construction would begin yet again. This would be a two room addition to accommodate the seventh and eighth
grades.
This would allow the building on Baker Street to be strictly Clinton High School.
As of January 1960 the student enrollment in Clinton Elementary School was209.
In the fall of 1966 ,Clinton had joined School District #49 and the high school students were bused to Lawrence High School. Grades 6 through8 were bused from Clinton Elementary school to the Baker Street School In time the 7th and 8th grade students would be attending Lawrence Junior High, and the sixth graders would once again be attending Clinton Elementary School.
The Clinton Elementary School would experience more additions, including a gymnasium in the middle 1970s.
In December 2025,after the Christmas Break,
all students started going to the Lawrence Primary School(pre k through grade 2)or the new Lawrence Elementary School (grades 3-6)on the Neck Rd in Benton.

In the mid-1950's,the sixth grade teacher at Clinton Elementary was Henrietta Witham. For at least three years, she produced and directed a variety show that was held at the Clinton Town Hall. It included every student in the school. This picture shows Bo (Ira) Witham and Coleen Bean singing "Buttons and Bows" in 1956.

The Library had the pleasure of hosting Michelle Shores and Bud Means for an author talk. We were thrilled to host the first discussion on Michelle's book, 'Henceforth and Unstoppable', which was penned at the library. It was a unique experience having Michelle write at our library and her talent is undeniable. As observed, every picture taken of Michelle and Bud radiated a certain glow. We extend our gratitude to Becky Turlo for the refreshments and lovely table arrangement.
