When the Clinton post office was established in 1829, it was named for DeWitt Clinton, Governor of N

ew York and the primary impetus behind the then-newly completed Erie Canal.[19]

Clinton was incorporated as a town by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 5, 1865, within portions of Clinton, Franklin and Union Townships. Clinton gained full independence from its three parent townships in 1895.[20]

The town is perhaps best known for its two mills which sit on opposite banks of the South Branch Raritan River. The Red Mill, with its historic village, dates back to 1810 with the development of a mill for wool processing.[21] Across the river sits the Stone Mill, home of the Hunterdon Art Museum for Contemporary Craft and Design, located in a former gristmill that had been reconstructed in 1836 and operated continuously until 1952, when a group of local residents conceived of a plan to convert the historic building into a museum. Message from the Mayor Regarding Dogs

As the weather warms up and more people are outside enjoying the community, I wanted to take the time to remind everyone about several of our ordinances relating to dogs.

*All dog owners are required to properly clean up any waste generated by their dog(s) and dispose of it in a safe manner. To assist with this, we have public trash cans throughout the community, as well as waste bag dispensers located at Hunts Mill Park, Main Street adjacent to the Truss bridge, and in the open area to the south of the tennis/pickle ball court. Under no circumstances should dog owners dispose of their pets' waste in another resident's trash can. If you are unable to dispose of it in a public can, please bring it home with you and dispose of it in your personal trash can. The ordinance regulating curbing of dogs can be viewed on our website at http://ecode360.com/12167166?highlight=curb,curbing,curbs,dog,dog%20curbed,dogs&searchId=26143967861126819 #12167166.

*All dog owners are required to ensure that their dog(s) are properly leashed at all times when in public. The ordinance regulating leashing of dogs can be viewed on our website at https://ecode360.com/12167152?highlight=leash,leashing&searchId=26147259246804013 #12167152.

By adhering to the requirements above, we will keep our community clean, safe and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike!

Thank you!

Janice Kovach
