💧 Using Water Wisely: Water Reuse ♻️

Did you know the average U.S. family uses over 300 gallons of water per day? Reusing water is a smart and sustainable way to reduce that number and protect our resources.

What is water reuse?
Water reuse (or recycling) is the process of treating and reusing water—like graywater, rainwater, or reclaimed water—for non-drinking purposes such as irrigation, toilet flushing, and more.

Benefits of water reuse:
Conserves valuable drinking water
Improves sustainability and water security
Can reduce potable water use by up to 25% in homes and 75% in commercial buildings
Lower treatment costs compared to potable water

Simple ways to get started:
Install rain barrels to collect roof runoff
Use graywater systems for irrigation or flushing
Create a rain garden to manage stormwater naturally
Always follow local codes and use licensed professionals

✅ Install low-flow showerheads & faucet aerators
✅ Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks
✅ Insulate your water pipes
✅ Keep showers to 5 minutes or less
✅ Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving
✅ Only run laundry & dishwashers with full loads
✅ Don’t let water run when washing dishes by hand
✅ Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of hosing them down

Building safety professionals, contractors, designers, and homeowners all play a role in creating safe, code-compliant buildings—but success comes down to communication and collaboration.

A recent article from the International Code Council highlights how we can work more effectively together:

✅Be transparent early – Sharing complete project details upfront helps avoid surprises during plan review and inspections.
✅Start with permit staff – Permit technicians are a valuable first resource and can guide projects in the right direction from the beginning.
✅Plan for the process – Most projects require revisions; setting realistic expectations helps keep projects on track.
✅Know and reference the code – Demonstrating code knowledge improves efficiency and communication with reviewers.

At the end of the day, building safety professionals aren’t trying to fail projects—we’re here to help ensure safety, protect the public, and support successful outcomes.

The path to working with building safety professionals starts with information, explanation, demonstration and polite discussion.
