As we head into our final night of celebrating Independence Day, I wanted to personally share an update and simply say...thank you, Clinton City.
Over the past three days, you've given us a lot to be proud of. We had zero fires on the first day and zero fires on the second day. Last night, on the Fourth of July, was certainly our busiest night, as many of you experienced. Even with all the fireworks being enjoyed across the city, we responded to only two very small grass fires. Both were handled by a single brush truck and extinguished in about a minute. I even got to participate in a gender reveal with blue fireworks to find out that one of our Clinton families are having a little baby boy! Congratulations!!
Those results don't happen by accident. They happen because of you.
Over the past few days, I had the chance to drive through many of our neighborhoods, visit with residents, and see families enjoying time together. I was reminded once again why Clinton City is such a special place. Everywhere I went, I saw people looking out for one another.
I saw hoses already connected and ready to use. I saw buckets of water sitting next to fireworks. I saw neighbors helping neighbors and families taking the time to clean up before moving on to the next firework. Those may seem like small things, but they make a tremendous difference. They help keep your family safe, they protect your neighbors, and they allow our firefighters to stay available for the emergencies that truly matter.
As Fire Chief, I couldn't be more proud of this community. Your preparedness, your common sense, and your willingness to do your part have made this holiday one of the safest we've had in recent years.
We still have tonight to go, so I'm asking everyone to finish strong. Please continue to celebrate responsibly, keep water nearby, thoroughly soak used fireworks before disposing of them, and be mindful of the dry conditions around your home and neighborhood.
Thank you for making safety a priority while still enjoying this great holiday. It is truly an honor to serve this community and to work alongside firefighters who are always ready to respond when needed.

𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦 𝗕𝗔𝗡 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗝𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢𝗡

Dear residents of Clinton,

As many of you are aware, Gov. Spencer Cox recently issued an executive order regarding fireworks and wildfire prevention. The governor’s order was designed to give local control to cities. We know there are strong feelings on this topic, and we want to provide clear information about the reasons for Clinton’s decision.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿

State law typically limits a city’s ability to ban fireworks. However, the governor issued an executive order, citing emergency conditions across the state. The order temporarily suspended the law.

The key, however, is that the order allows mayors and fire chiefs – those who know their communities best – to determine which areas are actually extremely hazardous and which areas can be thoughtfully identified for fireworks use while minimizing risk to our neighborhoods and public safety personnel.

𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

After extensive evaluation and consultation with local officials, the mayor and fire chief have decided to lift the ban for the majority of Clinton. Most of the city does not qualify as extremely hazardous.

The City places high priority on safety. In past years, Clinton has experienced very few incidents involving fireworks. Even during the exceptional drought conditions of 2022, we had only two small grass fires and one garbage fire, all of which were quickly contained with minimal impact. Clinton is suburban and does not border wildlands the way many other cities do.

The use of emergency executive power is very serious. We have concluded we cannot in good conscience override the Legislature’s laws without a clear threat of extreme hazard. We recognize there will always be risk. Dry residential yards do not pose the same fire management risk as wildlands, but we strongly urge the community to exercise caution in our neighborhoods.

𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀

If you choose to light fireworks this year, we ask that you do your part by using only legal fireworks, following all posted restrictions, having a water source readily available, cleaning up debris after use, and showing courtesy to neighbors. Responsible use of fireworks allows everyone to enjoy this special holiday while keeping our community safe.

This afternoon, Governor Cox signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency that temporarily suspends state law prohibiting the State Forester from restricting fireworks within municipalities.

Based on the information currently available, our understanding is that a statewide ban on fireworks will be implemented, with two exceptions:

1. Licensed public fireworks displays, such as a City’s Fourth of July celebration; and
2. Fireworks discharged within a designated area jointly approved by the Mayor and Fire Chief.

Tomorrow, we will be meeting with the State Forester and the Utah League of Cities and Towns to receive additional guidance and better understand how this executive order will be implemented.

We are analyzing areas that may be of concern and we will assess the dangers that may come if fireworks will be allowed.

Following tomorrow’s meeting, we will provide the community with additional information, including any local decisions and guidance.

🔥 Controlled Burn Notice – Clinton Fire Department 🔥

The Clinton Fire Department will be conducting a controlled burn at the Clinton pond today. This is a planned training exercise designed to help our crews maintain readiness and improve response skills.

Residents in the surrounding area may notice smoke and fire apparatus on scene. Please do not be alarmed—this activity is being closely monitored and conducted under safe conditions.

We kindly ask the public to avoid the area during this time to allow crews to operate safely and efficiently.
