This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the true meaning of the day honoring the brave men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our nation.

While many gather with family and friends this weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on those who never made it home and the families who continue to carry their memory.

Today, we honor the fallen, remember their sacrifice, and give thanks for their courage and selflessness

After spending the morning at Fire Headquarters completing a work detail, members responded to Route 81 near the entrance to the Clinton Crossing outlets for a reported two-car motor vehicle accident. While en route, crews were advised that one individual was trapped inside a vehicle. Using hydraulic extrication tools, members successfully removed the patient from the vehicle. That individual, along with two others involved in the accident, were transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day to remember and honor the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

This year, 363 names were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

The Clinton Volunteer Fire Department stands alongside our brothers and sisters in blue as we recognize the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of law enforcement officers who protect and serve our communities each day.

We are grateful for the strong partnership we share with the Clinton CT Police Department and law enforcement officers everywhere. Today, we especially remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty and the families, friends, and fellow officers they left behind.

Members responded to several incidents and conducted training over the weekend.

On Saturday, members responded to a residence for a reported chimney fire. Additionally, during the early morning hours on Sunday, members responded to a vehicle that went down a 15-foot embankment and into a river.

Also on Saturday, several crew members participated in refresher training on the fire boat. Training included area familiarization, navigation using onboard electronics, and operating the fire pump.

On Sunday, several members of the CVFD participated in a live fire training exercise with the Essex Fire Engine Co. #1 at their training facility.

Live fire training is essential, as it allows firefighters to train in conditions that closely replicate real-life scenarios. Instructors ignite controlled fires in specific areas of the structure, allowing members to enter, search for potential victims, and work to locate and extinguish the fire.

We would like to thank the Essex Fire Department for allowing us to use their facility. Partnerships like this are invaluable, as several surrounding departments provide access to training buildings for this type of hands-on experience, something we do not currently have available in town.

Members of the CVFD and Clinton CT Police Department responded to assist an individual who had fallen to the bottom of an embankment along a shallow river.

Working together, personnel from both agencies packaged the patient in a Stokes basket and carried them a short distance to a staging area where the CVFD UTV was positioned. The patient was then transported the remainder of the way out of the wooded area to an awaiting ambulance for further care.

This incident is a great example of how your local first responders work seamlessly together to provide help when it’s needed most

Today, the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, alongside the Guilford Fire Department, visited a forensics class at The Morgan School to give students a hands-on look at how responders handle hazardous materials incidents.

Students learned how we identify unknown substances, the risks involved in high-hazard responses, and the importance of preserving evidence while collecting public safety samples. They then put that knowledge into action using the Gemini system, which utilizes FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to identify substances in real time.

Raman and FTIR both analyze a chemical’s unique “fingerprint,” but in different ways Raman uses light scattering and can often scan through containers, while FTIR measures light absorption and typically requires direct sampling.

A big thank you to Chief Shove and the Guilford Fire Department for bringing this technology and helping provide a valuable real-world learning experience for these students.
