Spring is on its way to Vermillion County, and with it comes our newest tradition: the March Maker’s Market at the CRC (301 Blackman St, Clinton, 47842). This isn’t just another event—it’s a chance for neighbors to connect, for local artisans to shine, and for all of us to support the small businesses that make our community special. Behind it all is Brittany Page, whose passion for bringing people together has turned this market into something truly meaningful.

In our conversation, Brittany shares the story behind the market, why the CRC is the perfect place to host it, and how events like this strengthen our local economy and keep our small-town spirit alive. She’ll also tell you what to expect on March 14th from 1-4 PM, why it’s a must-visit for families and shoppers alike, and how she dreams of growing it even bigger in the future.

"Brittany, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. I know how busy you must be getting ready for the March Maker’s Market. To start, what was the spark that led you to create this event? Was it something you saw missing in Vermillion County, or just a love of bringing folks together?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗲:

"First, I would like to say thank you, Tom, for reaching out for an interview to share with the Chamber of Commerce. It’s nice to virtually meet you! I appreciate anyone who is willing to help small businesses grow and support community events. I have a heart for bringing people together and encouraging members of the community and surrounding areas to get out more to see what events the area has to offer!"

𝗧𝗼𝗺:

"The CRC feels like the heart of Clinton sometimes. What made it the perfect spot for this market? Was it the space, the location, or just that it’s where the community already gathers?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆:

"I decided to reach out to many different places to host this type of event, and thankfully, the owner of CRC, Brian, communicated with me and agreed. Now, the March Maker’s Market (March 14th, 1-4 PM) has been formed! I’m thankful he has been accommodating and open to having this event for the benefit of small businesses and citizens in the Wabash Valley!"

"How do you think this market benefits Vermillion County? Is it about supporting small businesses, or is there something even bigger—like keeping that small-town connection alive?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆:

"This market supports Vermillion County by encouraging residents to shop local, which strengthens the local economy. Events like this also create much bigger shared experiences and keep that small-town spirit alive!"

"Let’s get down to brass tacks: The market is on March 30th, right? What time should folks show up to get the best picks?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆:

"The March Maker’s Market is actually on Saturday, March 14th, from 1-4 PM. Doors open to the community at CRC at 1 PM!"

𝗧𝗼𝗺:

"What kind of vendors can we expect this year? Any new faces or old favorites people should keep an eye out for?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆:

"Visitors can expect 20+ local vendors offering a wide variety of handmade and specialty items, including candles, wax melts, jewelry, driftwood home decor, boutique clothing, custom shirts made on-site, leather goods, kitchenware and pantry items, wreaths and table centerpieces, handcrafted face and body care products, 3D prints and laser-engraved wood items, light-up coozies and buckets, a delicious assortment of baked goods, canned items, desserts, hand-crocheted toys, and even a local professional face painter! There will truly be something for everyone!"

𝗧𝗼𝗺:

"What’s your favorite part of the whole day? The setup, the crowd, or maybe that moment when you see a vendor make their first sale?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆:

"It’s difficult to pinpoint a favorite because I like the entire experience! I enjoy meeting the vendors face-to-face during setup because I know how much work and dedication goes into being a small business owner. I’m always happy to see crowds of people smiling and enjoying themselves, as well as vendors making sales!"

𝗧𝗼𝗺:

"If someone’s on the fence about coming, what would you say to convince them? And where can folks find more info if they want to join in—either as a shopper or a vendor?"

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆

"We are fully booked with vendors currently, but if this event goes well, there will be another chance for vendors to apply at a future time! If someone is on the fence about coming as a shopper, I’d say, ‘Come enjoy the Saturday afternoon and browse the wide variety of local talent!’ Even if they don’t make a purchase that day, they can network and possibly make a future purchase! It’s FREE entry! The Facebook Event can be found at this link, and flyers will also be distributed locally a week before the event!"

"Do you see this market growing in the future? Any dreams for where it could go next?"

"A Dream Come True: Clinton Kids to Chat with an Astronaut!"

This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the monthly City Council meeting in Clinton. And let me tell you, something extraordinary is happening right here in our community—something that will give local kids (and older dreamers alike!) a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Our very own Councilman Chuck Procarione shared exciting news about an event he’s been deeply involved in: a live conversation with an astronaut—yes, an actual astronaut—floating aboard the International Space Station (ISS)!

The Big Event: Talking to Space!

On Saturday, [insert date], at 9:45 AM, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum will host a special 10-minute window where 20 lucky kids (selected from over 100 questions submitted!) will get to ask an astronaut their burning questions—live from space!

This incredible opportunity is part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, which connects students with astronauts via ham radio. And thanks to the hard work of Councilman Procarione, local radio operators, and the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, our kids get to be part of it!

How Did This Happen?

A giant antenna has been set up on the roof of the Candlewood Suites in Terre Haute, all thanks to the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association. They’ve been testing, tweaking, and preparing for months to make sure everything works perfectly—because when the ISS passes overhead, they only get one shot!

Kevin Berlen, President of the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association, said, “We’ve been dreaming of doing something like this for years. Now, thanks to this partnership, we’re making it happen!”

Why This Matters for Clinton & Vermilion County
This isn’t just a Terre Haute event—it’s for all of us! Some of the kids asking questions might be from right here in Clinton or Vermilion County. And even if you’re not one of the 20 selected, you can still attend and witness history in the making!

If you could talk to someone in space, what would you ask? Here are a few fun ideas:

“What’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened in space?”

🏛️ Honoring a Legacy: The Dedication of the Major John T. Chunn Historical Marker 🏛️

A Moment in History

The Vermillion County community gathered at Universal Town Hall to dedicate a historical marker honoring Major John T. Chunn, the founder of Universal. This moment was more than just the unveiling of a plaque—it was a celebration of heritage, perseverance, and the spirit of a man who shaped the very ground we stand on.

Originally known as Chunn’s Ford, then Bunsen, and finally Universal, this town carries the legacy of a man who was not only a pioneer but also a soldier. Major Chunn served under General William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe and later commanded Fort Harrison near Terre Haute. His leadership and vision laid the foundation for the community we know today.

A Community Effort

This dedication was made possible through the collaborative efforts of:

Vermillion County Heritage Alliance (preserving our past for future generations)
Vermillion County Council and Commissioners (supporting local history and culture)
Universal Town Board (honoring the roots of their community)
Local supporters (who believe in the importance of remembering our history)

A special thanks to Cheryl Hargrave, whose countless hours of research and dedication brought Major Chunn’s story to life. Without her passion and perseverance, this moment would not have been possible.

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "I’ve been open for a year as of August 1st, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision to open Mane Street Cuts. I wanted to be close to home and provide the Clinton community with a welcoming, professional salon atmosphere for clients of all ages—from kids to seniors. Main Street felt like the perfect location because it’s the heart of our town, and I wanted to be part of the vibrant downtown community."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: What services can customers expect when they visit Mane Street Cuts, and is there anything special you’re offering for the grand opening?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "We offer a full range of services, including coloring, cuts for men, women, and children, waxing, Gel X nails, and gel polish. We also specialize in hair treatments and scalp conditioning to keep your hair healthy and beautiful. Building relationships with our clients and becoming a part of their lives is what makes this job so special. Of course, there were challenges—like any small business, we’ve had to adapt and problem-solve—but the support from the Clinton community has made it all worthwhile."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: How do you see Mane Street Cuts fitting into the Clinton community, and what do you hope it will bring to Main Street?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "Mane Street Cuts is more than just a salon—it’s a place where people can relax, connect, and feel good about themselves. I hope we bring a sense of warmth and community to Main Street. Clinton is where my family and friends are, and I love giving back and supporting the town that’s given me so much."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: What’s your favorite part of being a hair stylist and small business owner? What keeps you passionate about this work?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "I’ve been a stylist for 31 years, and what I love most is seeing my clients leave happy and confident. There’s nothing better than making someone’s day brighter with a great haircut or a new style. Giving back to the community and being part of people’s lives keeps me passionate about what I do."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: Are there any special promotions, events, or partnerships you’re excited to share with the community during the grand opening?

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: If someone’s never been to Mane Street Cuts before, what’s the one thing you want them to experience when they walk through the door?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "I want them to feel welcomed and relaxed. Mane Street Cuts is a place where everyone—from kids to seniors—can feel comfortable and leave looking and feeling their best. We’re all about creating a positive, uplifting atmosphere."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: Where do you see Mane Street Cuts in five years, and what are some of your big dreams for the shop?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "In five years, I hope Mane Street Cuts continues to grow and thrive as a beloved part of the Clinton community. My dream is to keep expanding our services and maybe even add more stylists to the team. Most importantly, I want to keep giving back and supporting the town I love."

𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧: Finally, Sandy—what does it mean to you to open this business in Clinton with the support of the Vermillion County community behind you?

𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗬: "It means everything. Clinton is my home, and the support from the Vermillion County community has been incredible. Opening Mane Street Cuts here has been a dream come true, and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s been part of this journey. This isn’t just my shop—it’s a place for all of us."
