Spring is on its way to Vermillion County, and with it comes our newest tradition: the March Makerโ€™s Market at the CRC (301 Blackman St, Clinton, 47842). This isnโ€™t just another eventโ€”itโ€™s a chance for neighbors to connect, for local artisans to shine, and for all of us to support the small businesses that make our community special. Behind it all is Brittany Page, whose passion for bringing people together has turned this market into something truly meaningful.

In our conversation, Brittany shares the story behind the market, why the CRC is the perfect place to host it, and how events like this strengthen our local economy and keep our small-town spirit alive. Sheโ€™ll also tell you what to expect on March 14th from 1-4 PM, why itโ€™s a must-visit for families and shoppers alike, and how she dreams of growing it even bigger in the future.

So, take a moment to read on and then mark your calendarsโ€”because this is one event you wonโ€™t want to miss.

Interview with Brittany Page

Conducted by Tom Burkett for the Vermillion County Chamber of Commerce

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜:

"Brittany, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. I know how busy you must be getting ready for the March Makerโ€™s Market. To start, what was the spark that led you to create this event? Was it something you saw missing in Vermillion County, or just a love of bringing folks together?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜† ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ:

"First, I would like to say thank you, Tom, for reaching out for an interview to share with the Chamber of Commerce. Itโ€™s nice to virtually meet you! I appreciate anyone who is willing to help small businesses grow and support community events. I have a heart for bringing people together and encouraging members of the community and surrounding areas to get out more to see what events the area has to offer!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"The CRC feels like the heart of Clinton sometimes. What made it the perfect spot for this market? Was it the space, the location, or just that itโ€™s where the community already gathers?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"I decided to reach out to many different places to host this type of event, and thankfully, the owner of CRC, Brian, communicated with me and agreed. Now, the March Makerโ€™s Market (March 14th, 1-4 PM) has been formed! Iโ€™m thankful he has been accommodating and open to having this event for the benefit of small businesses and citizens in the Wabash Valley!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"How do you think this market benefits Vermillion County? Is it about supporting small businesses, or is there something even biggerโ€”like keeping that small-town connection alive?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"This market supports Vermillion County by encouraging residents to shop local, which strengthens the local economy. Events like this also create much bigger shared experiences and keep that small-town spirit alive!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"Letโ€™s get down to brass tacks: The market is on March 30th, right? What time should folks show up to get the best picks?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"The March Makerโ€™s Market is actually on Saturday, March 14th, from 1-4 PM. Doors open to the community at CRC at 1 PM!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"What kind of vendors can we expect this year? Any new faces or old favorites people should keep an eye out for?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"Visitors can expect 20+ local vendors offering a wide variety of handmade and specialty items, including candles, wax melts, jewelry, driftwood home decor, boutique clothing, custom shirts made on-site, leather goods, kitchenware and pantry items, wreaths and table centerpieces, handcrafted face and body care products, 3D prints and laser-engraved wood items, light-up coozies and buckets, a delicious assortment of baked goods, canned items, desserts, hand-crocheted toys, and even a local professional face painter! There will truly be something for everyone!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"Whatโ€™s your favorite part of the whole day? The setup, the crowd, or maybe that moment when you see a vendor make their first sale?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"Itโ€™s difficult to pinpoint a favorite because I like the entire experience! I enjoy meeting the vendors face-to-face during setup because I know how much work and dedication goes into being a small business owner. Iโ€™m always happy to see crowds of people smiling and enjoying themselves, as well as vendors making sales!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"If someoneโ€™s on the fence about coming, what would you say to convince them? And where can folks find more info if they want to join inโ€”either as a shopper or a vendor?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†

"We are fully booked with vendors currently, but if this event goes well, there will be another chance for vendors to apply at a future time! If someone is on the fence about coming as a shopper, Iโ€™d say, โ€˜Come enjoy the Saturday afternoon and browse the wide variety of local talent!โ€™ Even if they donโ€™t make a purchase that day, they can network and possibly make a future purchase! Itโ€™s FREE entry! The Facebook Event can be found at this link, and flyers will also be distributed locally a week before the event!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"Do you see this market growing in the future? Any dreams for where it could go next?"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"Itโ€™s my heartโ€™s desire to see this growing into something bigger! Iโ€™ve reached out to several people to help spread the word of this event and have also paid for advertising in a couple of different locations. If anyone has any ideas for growth, wants to collaborate for future events, or has any feedback to share, please donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected]!"

๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ:

"Brittany, thank you so much for your time and for all the work youโ€™re doing to bring our community together. I canโ€™t wait to see you at the March Makerโ€™s Market on the 14th!"

๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜†:

"Thank you, Tom!"

"A Dream Come True: Clinton Kids to Chat with an Astronaut!"
By Tom Burkett, for Vermilion County families

This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the monthly City Council meeting in Clinton. And let me tell you, something extraordinary is happening right here in our communityโ€”something that will give local kids (and older dreamers alike!) a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Our very own Councilman Chuck Procarione shared exciting news about an event heโ€™s been deeply involved in: a live conversation with an astronautโ€”yes, an actual astronautโ€”floating aboard the International Space Station (ISS)!

The Big Event: Talking to Space!

On Saturday, [insert date], at 9:45 AM, the Terre Haute Childrenโ€™s Museum will host a special 10-minute window where 20 lucky kids (selected from over 100 questions submitted!) will get to ask an astronaut their burning questionsโ€”live from space!

This incredible opportunity is part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, which connects students with astronauts via ham radio. And thanks to the hard work of Councilman Procarione, local radio operators, and the Terre Haute Childrenโ€™s Museum, our kids get to be part of it!

How Did This Happen?

A giant antenna has been set up on the roof of the Candlewood Suites in Terre Haute, all thanks to the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association. Theyโ€™ve been testing, tweaking, and preparing for months to make sure everything works perfectlyโ€”because when the ISS passes overhead, they only get one shot!

Kevin Berlen, President of the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association, said, โ€œWeโ€™ve been dreaming of doing something like this for years. Now, thanks to this partnership, weโ€™re making it happen!โ€

Why This Matters for Clinton & Vermilion County
This isnโ€™t just a Terre Haute eventโ€”itโ€™s for all of us! Some of the kids asking questions might be from right here in Clinton or Vermilion County. And even if youโ€™re not one of the 20 selected, you can still attend and witness history in the making!

What Would YOU Ask an Astronaut?

If you could talk to someone in space, what would you ask? Here are a few fun ideas:

โ€œWhatโ€™s the scariest thing thatโ€™s ever happened in space?โ€
โ€œDo you miss pizza when youโ€™re up there?โ€
โ€œHow do you brush your teeth in zero gravity?โ€

Donโ€™t Miss Out!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 25, at 9:45 AM at the Terre Haute Childrenโ€™s Museum. Letโ€™s show up, cheer on our kids, and celebrate this amazing connection between our small-town dreams and the vastness of space!
A huge thank you to:

Councilman Chuck Procarione for bringing this opportunity to our community.

The Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association for making the tech magic happen.

The Terre Haute Childrenโ€™s Museum for hosting this unforgettable event.

Who knows? Maybe one of our Vermillion County kids will be inspired to become the next astronaut!

See you thereโ€”letโ€™s make history together! ๐Ÿš€โœจ

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Honoring a Legacy: The Dedication of the Major John T. Chunn Historical Marker ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

October 11, 2025 | Universal Town Hall, Universal, Indiana

A Moment in History

The Vermillion County community gathered at Universal Town Hall to dedicate a historical marker honoring Major John T. Chunn, the founder of Universal. This moment was more than just the unveiling of a plaqueโ€”it was a celebration of heritage, perseverance, and the spirit of a man who shaped the very ground we stand on.

Originally known as Chunnโ€™s Ford, then Bunsen, and finally Universal, this town carries the legacy of a man who was not only a pioneer but also a soldier. Major Chunn served under General William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe and later commanded Fort Harrison near Terre Haute. His leadership and vision laid the foundation for the community we know today.

A Community Effort

This dedication was made possible through the collaborative efforts of:

Vermillion County Heritage Alliance (preserving our past for future generations)
Vermillion County Council and Commissioners (supporting local history and culture)
Universal Town Board (honoring the roots of their community)
Local supporters (who believe in the importance of remembering our history)

A special thanks to Cheryl Hargrave, whose countless hours of research and dedication brought Major Chunnโ€™s story to life. Without her passion and perseverance, this moment would not have been possible.

Gratitude to Our Leaders

Weโ€™d also like to recognize the leadership and support of:

George Sanquenetti
Mike Warner
Brenda Rennels
Sue Weber
Tim Yocum

Your commitment to preserving our history and honoring our founders ensures that stories like Major Chunnโ€™s will continue to inspire future generations.

Why This Matters

Major Chunnโ€™s story is a reminder of the courage, resilience, and vision that built our communities. By dedicating this marker, we honor not just a man, but the spirit of perseverance that defines Vermillion County.
As we look at this marker, letโ€™s remember the lessons of the past and the responsibility we have to the future. History isnโ€™t just about what happenedโ€”itโ€™s about who we are and who we aspire to be.

Join Us in Celebrating Our Heritage!

We invite everyone to visit the Major John T. Chunn historical marker at Universal Town Hall. Take a moment to reflect on the legacy of those who came before us and the foundation they built for our community.

What a day! The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mane Street Cuts was nothing short of magical, and we couldnโ€™t be more thrilled to officially welcome Sandy Curry and her incredible team to the Vermillion County business community!

From the moment the scissors snipped that ribbon, it was clear: Mane Street Cuts isnโ€™t just a salonโ€”itโ€™s a home. A place where kids, seniors, and everyone in between can walk in feeling like a client and walk out feeling like family. And thatโ€™s exactly what Sandyโ€”a 31-year veteran stylist with deep roots in Clintonโ€”had in mind when she opened her doors right here on Main Street.

๐Ÿ’‡โ€โ™€๏ธ A Cut Above the Rest

Sandy and her team offer everything from fresh cuts and bold colors to waxing and Gel X nails, all with that personal touch that makes Mane Street Cuts so special. And guess what? For the entire month of September, theyโ€™re offering $10 off all color servicesโ€”because what better way to celebrate than by making sure you leave looking and feeling your best?

๐Ÿ’ฌ A Heartfelt Thank You

Sandy shared that the most rewarding part of this journey has been building relationships with her clients and giving back to the community thatโ€™s supported her for decades. And letโ€™s be honestโ€”Clinton showed up BIG for her ribbon cutting! From familiar faces to new friends, the love in that room was palpable.

๐Ÿ“ž Ready to Book?

Sandy is growing Mane Street Cuts into a staple of downtown Clintonโ€”a place where everyone feels welcome, beautiful, and at home.

Sandy, when we started this conversation, you shared how opening Mane Street Cuts was about being close to home and giving the Clinton community a welcoming place to gather. Now, a year into this journey, itโ€™s clear that youโ€™ve done exactly thatโ€”and so much more. Youโ€™ve created a space where people of all ages feel at home, where clients become friends, and where the spirit of Clinton shines bright. Mane Street Cuts isnโ€™t just a salon; itโ€™s a testament to what happens when passion, community, and a little bit of small-town heart come together. Thank you for bringing your talent, your warmth, and your dedication to Main Street. Hereโ€™s to many more years of making Clinton beautifulโ€”one haircut at a time!

Here, where the coffeeโ€™s always hot
and the chairs are worn just right,
Sandy works her quiet magicโ€”
not with a wand, but with shears,
not with spells, but with stories.

She knows the way a haircut
can turn a bad day around,
the way a color can bring back
the sparkle in someoneโ€™s eyes.
She knows the weight of a childโ€™s first trim,
the pride of a teen before the dance,
the way a man leaves standing taller
than when he came in.

This shop isnโ€™t just a business.
Itโ€™s a place where the community gathers,
where the mirror reflects more than hairโ€”
it reflects the heart of this town,
the way we take care of each other,
the way we hold on, and hold up,
and keep going, together.

So come on in.
Take a seat.
Let Sandy work her magic.
And when you leave,
youโ€™ll take a little of Main Street with youโ€”
not just in the way you look,
but in the way you feel:
like you belong.
