We’re excited to introduce Alethea Cahoy as the new Director of United Way Clinton County, Iowa.

Alethea’s passion for helping others is deeply personal. Growing up during the farm crisis, her family experienced firsthand the challenges many families face.

Support from community programs, including food and clothing assistance, helped make difficult times a little easier and showed her the lasting impact of a helping hand.

These experiences continue to shape her commitment to serving others and strengthening our community.

As she begins this new chapter with United Way, Alethea brings compassion, understanding, and a belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Please join us in giving Alethea a warm welcome to the United Way family. We’re excited for what’s ahead and look forward to sharing more updates with you soon!

Iowa Legal Aid works every day to ensure hope, dignity, and justice are within reach for low‑income Iowans. Their mission is simple but powerful: provide free legal help, challenge unfair policies, and empower people to advocate for their rights.

Civil legal issues can quickly spiral into financial crisis. Iowa Legal Aid helps Clinton County residents navigate these challenges so they can stay housed, protect their income, and stabilize their families.

Through their Financial Stability Project, they assist residents who may be one crisis away from deepening poverty. This includes helping prevent evictions and foreclosures, securing unemployment benefits, stopping harassment from debt collectors, supporting clients through bankruptcy, and fighting predatory lending practices.

They also prioritize helping survivors of domestic violence. Iowa Legal Aid helps victims obtain protective orders, secure custody of their children, gain possession of the family home, and safely leave abusive situations.

United Way funding helps ensure that Clinton County residents with low income can access these critical civil legal services—giving families a path to safety, stability, and a more secure future.

For more than 50 years, the DeWitt Referral Center has been a lifeline for families facing hardship. What began as a small thrift store and food pantry has grown into a trusted community resource that ensures no neighbor faces crisis alone.

Every day, people navigate some of life’s hardest moments. It may be a parent choosing between rent and groceries, a senior trying to keep the lights on, a family overwhelmed by medical bills, or a worker whose car repair threatens their stability. The Center is able to respond with compassion and practical help. They provide nutritious food, rent and utility assistance, transportation support, medical expense help, and essential items like clothing, diapers, bedding, hygiene supplies, and more. These resources restore stability, dignity, and hope for families working hard to get back on their feet.

United Way funding plays a vital role in making this support possible. It helps cover urgent needs like rent, utilities, and prescriptions, strengthens the food pantry, and removes barriers to employment by assisting with transportation costs. It also supports local kids through school supplies and free school milk, easing financial strain for families.

Together, these services create a safety net that reduces financial stress, promotes stability, and strengthens the well-being of our entire community. United Way’s investment ensures the DeWitt Referral Center can continue offering hope when it’s needed most. 💙

For more than 100 years, YWCA Clinton has been a lifeline for individuals and families in need of safe, stable housing. At the heart of their mission is a simple belief: everyone deserves safety, dignity, and a place to call home. Through compassion and practical support, they help individuals stabilize, rebuild, and rediscover hope. Today, the YWCA Clinton Empowerment Center supports people experiencing homelessness or at risk due to financial hardship, violence, mental health challenges, or other barriers to stability.

The Empowerment Center provides a full continuum of services, including homelessness prevention, rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, street outreach, emergency shelter, financial planning, and ongoing case management. Their coordinated approach surrounds each participant with the support needed to achieve stability and long‑term self‑sufficiency.

They work closely with community partners to address the complex challenges that make housing difficult to secure and maintain, with a strong focus on preventing homelessness before it begins.

United Way funding strengthens this essential work by supporting the wrap‑around services that help people move toward independence and lasting success. 💙

IRAS has been part of the Clinton County community since 1979, growing from a simple referral agency into a trusted source of direct support. With services ranging from rent and utility assistance to food pantries, motel vouchers, IDs, and essential household goods, IRAS meets people where they are in moments of crisis.

The 2021 merger with the Associate Benevolent Society strengthened this mission, bringing food and essential items under the same roof as financial assistance. Today, IRAS operates the largest food pantry in Clinton County and provides comprehensive help to families and individuals every day.

A stronger community starts with accessible support, and IRAS continues to be that support for so many.

For ten years, My G.E.A.R. Outreach has been a steady source of comfort for children entering foster care. Each First Overnight Bag is filled with age‑appropriate essentials to help ease one of the most difficult transitions a child can face.

Last year alone, 43 children in Clinton County received these bags; each one a reminder that our community cares.

We’re grateful for the compassion and commitment behind this work, and for the difference it continues to make for kids right here at home.
