It's good to see so many parts of our system in one room today for the Early Matters Network Improvement Community: first grade teachers, site and district administrators, our expanded learning team, and our FCSS partners across Community Schools, Continuous Improvement, C2C, Expanded Learning, and CTE and ROP. That mix isn't an accident. We're heading into Year 3 of our work to improve early literacy rates across Fresno County, alongside our partner districts, Caruthers, Firebaugh, and Coalinga-Huron. Through this NIC, 328 kindergarten students across six schools in three districts made real gains in foundational literacy. By the end of last year, 85% were at benchmark in phoneme segmentation, 87% in consonant sounds, and 81% in vowel sounds. Across five literacy skills, students improved 17 to 49 percentage points, and fewer of them needed intensive support than when the year began. That’s remarkable!
That kind of growth happens because teachers, sites, and districts aligned around a shared goal and used data to sharpen their practice together, not because any one classroom or program did it alone.A strong start in early literacy gives students full access to their education and better academic, social, and behavioral outcomes down the road. This year we're excited to keep building our kindergarten work while expanding this journey into first grade classrooms. In the words of 1st grade teacher Pam Sherwood from Monroe Elementary, “This year has been a game changer for me- my students all came into the start of the year reading!”

The California Science Test (CAST) provides insight into how students are progressing in science based on California's Next Generation Science Standards. Students take the assessment in 5th grade, 8th grade, and once in high school. Families whose students participated last school year will receive a Student Score Report (SSR). I was happy to join Foundation Executive Director MaryEllen Galvan in visiting the new Jakara Youth Center in NW Fresno. Lead by director Nanaki Kaur, the center will be a space for youth to gather to promote and honor service, leadership, and academic excellence. Movie nights, games, tutoring and just handing out- things that make kids, well kids. Cool!

Congratulations to our August 2026 Superintendent’s Superstar Madison Bisko! An incoming senior at Sierra High School, Madison is an exceptional scholar-athlete, ranking second in her class with a 4.43 GPA. She has taken several dual-enrollment college courses alongside her high school honors and AP courses, meeting all academic standards with exemplary marks, all resulting from diligent work habits.

While completing the Marketing and Business Leadership CTE pathway, Madison has excelled in learning Canva, Google Workspace and Canvas, demonstrating her creativity through media posts and campus promotional materials. Madison has been a member of the Associated Student Body Leadership program since junior high here at Sierra Junior Senior High School. During this period, she has served the Class of 2027 as class representative, secretary, and vice president.

As the current ASB Music and Dance Co-Commissioner, Madison demonstrates her critical thinking and problem-solving skills, organizational and planning skills and displays her ability to manage time effectively by meeting demanding deadlines. Madison has demonstrated superior interpersonal skills and works well both independently and in group settings.

Among her many service activities in the school and community, Madison has been a part of Girls Varsity Volleyball, Girls Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Softball, ASB, CSF, FCA, Ski Club and Stewards of the Sierra Club. Well-liked and respected by her peers and teachers, Madison has served as a liaison between the community non-profit The Sierra Foundation and Sierra High ASB for the past several years, encouraging others to volunteer and serve their community.

With 10 years of service at the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, including seven years as a classroom teacher, Karla exemplifies the very best of her profession. She is an exceptionally caring and dedicated educator who consistently puts her students and their families at the center of everything she does. She goes above and beyond to ensure that each student’s academic, social and emotional needs are met, often extending her support well beyond the classroom. Families deeply trust her, knowing she is a steady advocate for their children and a compassionate partner in their educational journey.

Karla’s calm and grounded demeanor is one of her greatest strengths. It allows her to build meaningful connections with students, families and colleagues, even in the most challenging situations. Yesterday was a day full of community celebrations! First, the annual TCM Childrens Breakfast; second the annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway hosted by Pastor Jim Franklin at Cornerstone Community Cares; a brief visit with our C and I team and ending the day at the SOUL Charter School new building ribbon cutting. Everyone of these events centered our students and the important role we adults have to play for their success.
