Everyone say a prayer for our girl Elsa ( the anatolian shepherd). She has been in the Er vet hospital for the last two days.
Some time on Sunday, she came in contact with an obscure type of mold spores, or possibly wild mushrooms, and i found her having violent tremors and foaming at the mouth that evening.
It was terrifying to find her in such a state. She was cognizant and reacting to my voice but had no control over her head and legs and was completely panic stricken and I was trying not hard to be so too.
With the help of local staffer Alli , i was able to get her loaded to head to the vet hospital, and her daughter Peyton accompanied me in the car to help me keep her calm and safe.
She is stable now, but as of last night was still very weak and struggling to maintain control of her movements.
For those that havent had the pleasure of meeting her, Elsa is the kindest gentlest soul.
She and her sister were "the 4th of july puppies" from 2 years ago. They had crawled up onto somebody's porch, in the 100⁰ heat, completely dehydrated, emaciated, and barely clinging to life at appoximately 14 weeks old. The rescue that was first contacted, was full and reached out to us. There was, of course, no question we would bring them in. Livestock guardians, with their unique minds and uncanny intuition hold a special place in my heart, and as they settled in and came back to health, it was clear that there was something particularly magical in the connection i had with Elsa.
We have rescued A LOT of street babies over the years and, although the goodbyes always take a piece of our hearts with them, we steward them knowing that our goal is placement with their new best-friends-for-life. We just foster them as their soft landing place.
A lot of people use the term "foster fail" when a dog meant to be adopted out ends up staying, but i have always considered it a "foster win" when they find their forever ❤️right where they landed instead.
Elsa is our foster win. She has shared love and joy with 100s of visitors over these past two years. She steals your heart when she looks at you with eyes that seem to meet your soul, and always seems to know when someone needs that little bit of extra love. She even has a bit of a fan club with some of our young service men and women from Ft Bragg who come to just sit quietly and get their fix of canine love and peace - therapy for the heart. She means the world to all who have met her.
There is every indication that she will fully recover but she has a bit of a road ahead to get there.
Please keep her in your thoughts and send that light her way.
Needless to say the bill is astronomical. There was zero hesitation to protect her and save her at any cost, but we could really use your help. I have posted a picture of the bill as of that first night - which ended up at the high-end, and with her extra night's stay, it is expected to be up over $3,300.00. I will post the final bill in the comments when we pick her up.
I know many of us are struggling with the cost of everything right now but every dollar helps, and shares are so valuable too!!
We will post an update as soon as she can safely come home.
