🔥 HARNETT COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL & N.C. FOREST SERVICE BURN BAN IN EFFECT TODAY (MARCH 28, 2026) AT 6 p.m. 🔥

The Harnett County Fire Marshal and N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning statewide, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

Local fire departments and law enforcement officers are assisting the N.C. Forest Service in enforcing the burn ban.

The N.C. Forest Service will continue to monitor conditions. Residents with questions regarding a specific county can contact their N.C. Forest Service county ranger or their county fire marshal’s office.

Effective Saturday, March 28 at 8 a.m., the National Weather Service has issued a **RED FLAG WARNING** for some North Carolina counties. For counties that aren’t under a red flag, fire danger is still critical. Review weather alerts for North Carolina at weather.gov.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create dangerous fire behavior.

While open burning is permitted during a red flag, it is NOT advised. Please postpone ALL outdoor burning. If there was ever a time to show you can follow instructions the first time they are given, it’s now.

Fire danger remains elevated in some areas of the state. This time of year, wind is a big contributing factor.

Even a light breeze can carry embers away from a fire, starting new fires in nearby areas. These spot fires can quickly grow, making them more difficult to control, impossible to control for those who were unprepared from the start.

Wind also increases how fast a fire spreads and how intensely it burns.

If it’s windy, it’s not a safe day to burn yard debris.

Waiting for calmer conditions helps reduce the risk of a fire getting out of control.

Remember, check fire danger and weather conditions for your area.

For helpful guidance before burning outdoors, contact your N.C. Forest Service county ranger's office for guidance.

With current conditions, it only takes a spark to start a wildfire.

That spark could come from equipment, a burn pile, a vehicle or improperly discarded smoking materials. Under dry and windy conditions, fires don’t need much to get started—and once they do, they can spread quickly.

Be mindful of anything that could create a spark and avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve.

Spread prevention, not wildfire.

🔥 NO OUTSIDE FIRES 🔥

🔥 Please refrain from ANY burning 🔥

Fire danger remains high, even extreme in some areas, statewide. Fires can start almost immediately and easily from all causes. Fires can spread rapidly and intensify quickly. Spot fires are a constant danger. Spot fires are new, separate fires ignited outside the main fire perimeter and primarily caused by burning embers.

Discard cigarette butts, matches and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Use extreme caution when handling potential ignition sources such as machinery and farm equipment.

When vegetation is dry, humidity is low and the wind is moving, fire danger is high and wildfire risk increases.

Before burning outdoors, use these common-sense resources:

🔥 Check fire danger in your area: https://climate.ncsu.edu/fire/.

🔥 Check the weather for your area, especially wind conditions: weather.gov.

🔥 Contact your local NCFS county ranger’s office for guidance: ncforestservice.gov/contacts.

We wanted to take a moment, while we are still more than 96 hours out from a potential significant winter weather event, to encourage residents, businesses, and partners across Harnett County to begin preparing now and to monitor forecasts from reliable, factual sources. As winter weather approaches, it is important to be mindful of where forecast information is coming from. Many outlets provide professional, science-based forecasts, while others unfortunately rely on speculation or social media “hype.” We strongly encourage everyone to rely on trusted weather sources and official updates as conditions develop.

During a winter storm, the most common concerns at home or work include loss of heat, power, and communication services, as well as limited access to supplies if conditions persist for more than a day. Taking a few steps now can make a significant difference.

You should ensure you have the following items available:

- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio or portable radio to receive emergency information
- Extra food and water, including items that do not require cooking or refrigeration
- Extra prescription medications
- Baby supplies such as diapers and formula, if applicable
- First-aid supplies
- Adequate heating fuel; refuel before supplies run low, as deliveries may be delayed after a storm
- A safe emergency heat source (fireplace, wood stove, or properly ventilated space heater)
- Fire extinguisher and working smoke alarms, “test alarms monthly”
- Extra pet food and appropriate shelter for pets

If you use a generator, review generator safety procedures and never operate a generator in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Ensure your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and that exterior vents are clear of leaves, debris, or snow during and after the storm.

Home fires are more common during the winter months when additional heating sources are in use. Please take time to review fire safety practices to help protect your home and loved ones.

Harnett County Emergency Management will continue to monitor forecast conditions and provide factual updates as confidence in the forecast increases. Now is the time to prepare, before weather conditions require you to react.

Stay safe and stay informed.
