The Cochranton American Legion has been a part of the community since it's chartering shortly after World War 2. The Post is made up of veterans from wars and conflicts spanning from WW2, through Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon & Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, the Global War on Terror, Iraq, Afghanistan, and men and women who are serving on active duty today. Detachments also sponsored by, which are an in
tegral part of the Post, are the Ladies Auxillary, and Sons of the American Legion. The Post sponsors an American Legion Baseball team each year. In addition, interested youths are sponsored at Keystone Boys State and State Police Youth Week (also known as Camp Cadet). The first level for the national American Legion Essay Scholarship and the American Legion Oratorical Scholarship competions are administered through the local Post. A scholarship is also awarded every year, locally, by this Post. Community support and patriotic programs are a regular part of the activities particpated in by the members. From the annual Memorial Day program at the Cochranton Cemetery, an annual Boy Scout flag retirement program, the Cochranton Fair Parade, to the annual Veteran's Day program at the Cochranton High School. Many local churches, retirement communities, and senior centers request Post programs for their members. The Color Guard and Firing Detail, which are AP3 Military Funeral Honors certified, provide memorial/funeral services, as requested, for all qualifying veterans. Several programs are also in place to assist veterans who are wounded, homeless, or otherwise in need. For the Post to continue to provide the support and services to local veterans and the Cochranton community, as with many organizations, new members are a badly needed resource. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Post, the Auxilary, or the Sons can contact the Post at (814) 425-1493, here, or at [email protected], for more information. Any/all training and uniforms/equipment are provided by the Post. All that's required of anyone meeting eligibility requirements, is a desire/willingness to participate.
