After 13 years of faithful service to the City of Cockrell Hill, our most tenured patrolman retires from the Cockrell Hill Police Department and continues his journey in law enforcement with another agency, where he will bring the same level of service and dedication to the people he serves.

Police Officer Merced Carrillo began his employment as a young man in Communications, where he worked as a dispatcher. He served as the voice of 911 and the radio custodian in charge of keeping officers safe. While working and raising a daughter, he put himself through the Academy, enduring countless sleepless days and nights, and graduated, becoming the first police officer in his family. He was eventually hired by the city as a patrolman and faithfully served for over ten years on the street.

Among PO Carrillo’s career highlights include a fire rescue at an apartment complex [https://bit.ly/2RyjGv4], wherein a man’s life was saved, the recovery of a stolen bicycle for an elderly man who’d lost his sole method of transportation, defending the city’s municipal building by himself against an attack [https://bit.ly/2OGkZZZ] and his intervention in multiple incidents such as burglaries and robberies that have prevented countless citizens from harm.

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, we bid farewell to PO Carrillo and he said his final 'see you later' during his last out-of-service radio call. Communications Officer Toscano was on-duty to receive this bittersweet transmission.

We wish PO Carrillo the best and we know he will thrive and succeed wherever his paths take him! Good luck, partner! #AdiosCarrillo

On Thursday, March 8, 2018, at approximately 1330 hours, a suspect identified as ERIC SCOTT VERSCHOORE attacked the Cockrell Hill Municipal Building, causing damage to various structures. His motivation remains unknown but he manifested suicidal tendencies and suffers from severe mental disorders, suggesting that he may have anticipated a deadly force encounter with officers after his attack. Police Officer Carrillo, who was stationed at the Communications Office at the time, was able to radio for assistance, engaged the threat and took the suspect into custody, suffering minor injuries in the process. PO Carrillo's actions prevented further harm to the citizens in and around the building, including other city employees, as well as the suspect himself. VERSCHOORE was transported to the hospital by ambulance for medical and psychiatric evaluation. PO Carrillo has recovered from his minor injuries and is back to work! Great job!

03/10/2018

Starting at 9:00am today, South Cockrell Hill Road will be closed to ALL through traffic from West Jefferson Boulevard to Division Street. A detour has been established from Division Street down the newly repaved Archer Avenue to the west.

Residents on South Cockrell Hill Road will be able to access their homes through barricades on the east/west cross streets (Higgins Avenue, Garfield Avenue, Meredith Avenue).

NO TRUCK TRAFFIC is allowed southbound on South Cockrell Hill Road past West Davis Street. Signage has been in place for several weeks informing commercial traffic to seek an alternate route.

Enforcement of thoroughfare violations will be in place and a significant police presence on the detour route down Archer Avenue is expected to ensure safe flow of traffic that abides by the residential speed limit of 25 miles per hour.

This road closure is expected to last for over a year and, as the Police Department, we shall do our best to ensure safety for all parties in the variety of construction zones throughout the City. Please be aware that construction zone violations have a higher penalty so as to deter the operation of vehicles in a manner that may endanger workers or residents in the area.

We truly appreciate your patience during this time. Thank you for helping to make Cockrell Hill a better place to live, work and visit.

Since our February 10th post about line-of-duty police officer deaths [http://bit.ly/2EXdiK8], five more heroes have given their lives in the performance of their duties. Two died in vehicle crashes, while three others were murdered by gunfire. Among the three includes Chicago Police Department Commander Paul Bauer, who, despite his high-ranking position, still answered the call of public trust and attempted to assist fellow officers in apprehending a dangerous shooting suspect when he was killed. Yesterday, Prince George’s County (Maryland) Police Department Corporal Mujahid Ramzziddin came to the aid of a domestic violence victim while he was OFF-DUTY when the victim was being attacked by a dangerous subject against whom she’d currently had a protective order in place. After shooting Corporal Ramzziddin, the coward stole his service weapon and fled, eventually being chased down by other police units and neutralized by pursuing officers.

Please take a moment to view these officers’ names and memorials, leave a reflection on their Officer Down Memorial pages [www.odmp.org] and understand the tremendous sacrifice that these men and women, whom all leave behind children, families and loved ones, make every single day in service of the protection of our freedoms.

“No matter the sacrifice, the opposition or the difficulty, the mission is clear: the efficient and judicious service and protection of our citizenry.”

As you may already be aware, the City is undergoing major roadwork in a major effort to improve our community. The focal point of the project is the intersection at South Cockrell Hill Road and West Jefferson Boulevard. Inevitably, this project will cause traffic pattern changes and delays. Please plan your routes accordingly, especially during peak traffic hours. There are several conduit streets you can take to proceed to your destination in any direction. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and look forward to the plan to making Cockrell Hill a better place to work, visit and live. Many thanks to the Dallas County Public Works Department, the City of Dallas, the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Area Rapid Transit and the DART Police Department for being courteous and professional partners during this metamorphosis.
