A neighbor knocked on our door. He was holding a twig covered with lichens. He wanted to know what heck they were and how could he get rid of them, because they were killing his tree. I explained that no, these were not killing his tree, but because the twigs were bare, their spores had germinated there to take advantage of the good light (without the leaves). He's not alone in thinking the lichens are causing harm to trees, so I thought I should provide some needed background. Read my article: Lichen: a three-way symbiotic organism

CODIT at work:
Compartmentalization of decay in trees (CODIT) is a concept identified by Alex Shigo after studying wood-decay fungus patterns. Dr. Shigo's theory claims that when trees are wounded, they respond to the infected wood with both chemical and physical changes to limit the decay, which he called compartmentalization.

Found the mother of all balsam apples today while working at a client's house! We almost filled a wheelbarrow with the material from this one awful plant that we removed from the canopy of a lemon tree. I bet that lemon tree feels like the weight of the world has been lifted from it!
