Please use the link below to tell NOAA by June 2nd at 11:59pm to keep speed limits in place to reduce the risk of vessel collisions with North Atlantic right whales. There is NO proven technology to reduce this risk that's as effective as slowing your speed.

Additionally, many commercial companies plan their trips months in advance. Factoring in an 'emergency' reroute or slow down affects their scheduling and their bottom line. Slower speeds can be factored into their schedules ahead of time and they don't need to worry about last minute changes that could cost them money.

The Vessel Speed Rule is a necessary lifeline for North Atlantic right whales and reduces mortality risk to right whales by ~90%. With fewer than 400 remaining, the loss of even a single whale, particularly a reproductive female or calf, has profound consequences for the survival of the species. As many of you know, 23 new calves were born this year, and they deserve a chance to live without the ever-looming threat of an accidental vessel strike.

Even though this rule is successful in reducing collisions, NOAA now is considering removing this rule for unproven technology. While technology can help detection, it cannot replace mitigation. Slower speeds not only reduce whale deaths but also increase the chance that vessel operators and whales can avoid collisions altogether.

Use our form with Endangered Species Coalition and tell NOAA to keep the vessel speed rule in place https://endangered.quorum.us/campaign/159842/

🌊 Blue S.E.A. Marine Science Session

Hosted by Blue World Research Institute & Argonauta Academy

Ages 13-18 $275.00

🌊 Join us for science, education, & adventure in this hands-on, feet-wet marine science STEAM camp! During this deep dive into marine science, we will process a wildlife forensics crime scene, test water quality, complete dissections, master knot tying, learn about cetacean disentanglement and strandings, and study microplastics. We will learn the art of Gyotaku fish printing, discover how technology such as camera traps and drones helps researchers, explore the lagoon with seine nets, experience a nighttime nesting sea turtle walk, and so much more! The camp will meet at Argonauta Academy, the Indian River Lagoon, and the beach.
