RED FLAG WARNING across the entire forest! Please be careful on your public lands.

The hot and extremely dry conditions will persist through this weekend, with the addition of breezier wind. The combination of this will result in near-critical to critical fire weather conditions across the area. Dry lightning is also possible (10%) across southwest Wyoming Sunday afternoon.

Update 8/8/26 0800: There was no additional growth on the fire. Firefighters will continue to mop up the fire until it is completely out. This will be the last report unless significant changes occur.

Update 8/7/26 0800: The current size is 2.5 acres. Eight Smokejumpers are on the fire assisted by two helicopters. They were able to get saw line around the fire last night and will strengthen their containment line today After that they will begin the process of "mopping" up, or finding and extinguishing hot spots along the fire's edge.

A few weeks ago we had to close the area for public safety while we were conducting blasting operations on the Morrison Jeep Trail. Over a couple days the blasting crew led by Crosby Davidson was able to perform 5 different "shots" or blasts to remove old debris, clear the road base, and expand the area so that the excavator could safely navigate the terrain. Just a reminder, the switchbacks are still closed to the public until the maintenance is complete later this summer. As always a huge thank you to Wyoming State Trails for their assistance on this project.

Smoke from wildfires across the Pacific Northwest has been funneled into the area, especially the central and northern basins. Locations mainly east of the Divide have seen smoke mix down to the surface, leading to poor air quality and reduced visibility. Air Quality Alerts are in effect today through Tuesday at 11 AM.

Brooks Lake Road (Forest Road 515), near Togwotee Pass on the Shoshone National Forest, is temporarily closed due to a large debris flow in the Pinnacles area resulting from a storm on July 22, 2026. The Wind River Ranger District mobilized heavy equipment the next day to begin clearing the road. Crews and equipment continue to work on clearing debris from the flow channel and stabilizing the road. The Forest is acquiring materials to replace damaged culverts, complete repairs and restore access. Due to public safety concerns, the road to Brooks Lake will remain temporarily closed until the work is completed. The road is closed at its junction with U.S. Highway 26. Access to Brooks Lake Lodge, Brooks Lake and Pinnacles Campgrounds, several trailheads in the area, and all spur roads are also closed. There is no timeline before the road is reopened and access is restored, although that will occur as soon as possible. Falls, Horse Creek and Double Cabin campgrounds are still open and accessible on the Wind River District. Dispersed camping is also still available on the Wind River and Washakie Ranger Districts. The Shoshone National Forest will provide updates as work progresses.

An update on the progress for the Morrison Jeep Trail. We're moving fast and have been able to achieve the desired condition on 16 of 21 switchbacks. That's only 5 more to go before the slow walk back down to work on the reroute of the lower section.

Have you ever driven the Morrison Jeep Trail? Imagine navigating that on a excavator!? A huge shout out Tim Martell with Wyoming State Trails and his amazing skill set, its quite the feat, what he's been able to accomplish with that machine!
