Dear Community Members,
The Cody Volunteer Fire Department has always looked forward to participating in the annual 4th of July parade—a tradition we deeply value and one that brings joy to both our members and the community.
In recent years, however, new rules and regulations have made our participation increasingly difficult. We initially agreed to stop throwing candy from our trucks, provided we could continue the long-standing tradition of water balloons. Unfortunately, we’ve now been informed that water balloons are no longer allowed either.
We understand the parade committee’s concerns, particularly regarding liability and insurance, and we respect the role of the outriders in enforcing the rules. However, the water balloon “fight” has long been a beloved part of the parade. Community members often begin tossing balloons at us from the start of Main Street, and returning the fun has become part of the experience we all look forward to.
Faced with the choice of breaking the rules, altering our participation in a way that doesn’t reflect the spirit of the tradition, or stepping back entirely, we sought a compromise with the parade committee. Unfortunately, no flexibility was offered regarding the established regulations. Because we cannot control the actions of parade attendees—many of whom initiate the water balloon exchanges—we felt the only responsible option to avoid violating any rules was to limit our participation this year.
As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to only enter our historic Truck 00 and the hose cart for the parades so that the kids can still take part and enjoy some candy. No other fire engines will be involved this year.
We sincerely apologize to those who look forward to seeing the fire department in the parade and enjoying the water balloon fun. This decision was not made lightly, and we appreciate your understanding.
That said, we’re proud to continue another long-standing tradition: feeding our community after the parade on the 4th of July. We warmly invite everyone to join us at the fire hall for burgers and hotdogs following the 4th of July parade. It’s one of our favorite ways to say thank you and celebrate with all of you.
We wish the parade committee all the best in hosting a safe and successful event, and we hope to return in future years if circumstances change.
Sincerely,
HR Coe
