Why wait.
Nostalgia. Why can it be so harmful? Well, when talking to someone who has been in uniform comfortably, Iām sure they can come up with a number of reasons when transitioning into their civilian lives. For an average Joe, it might be harder. Letās break it down. By definition nostalgia is āa sentimental longing or wistful affection for the pastā. Yes, it refers to āpositive associationsā. Which can be warming, but what if itās also associated with a bad experience? Or in some cases a thrilling experience. What if that positive feeling was shallow and deep down it actually left a scar? This is where bad habits are created, a shallow āband-aidā fix for a serious problem.
The stereotype of this holiday is new resolutions, new goals to implement in your life to make it better than the year before. No matter how cheesy, itās an excellent point. A period of self assessment, self reflection. Sometimes we just need an occasion to motivate change. Whether itās a new year, a new month or just a new day, there is plenty of opportunity to forget harmful habits and make room for healthy ones. Be intentional. Donāt set yourself up for failure, prepare for success.
Start a healthy relationship with memory-nostalgia. A hard reality check could be potential for the most improvement. In a world and time of so many unknowns, find something solid to lean on. Like Edward Magoruim said in Mr. Magoriumās Wonder Emporium; āLife is an occasion. Rise to itā.
