One of many gorges carved within the High K**b Massif ( drains 16.4 square mile Little Stony Basin ). It contains an American Whitewater rated Class IV-V+ steep creek, with awesome waterfalls dropping off quartz arenite ledges at top of gorge. Part of a series of 6 consecutive EXTREME to difficult

whitewater creeks, draining six major gorges, from west to east across core of massif. South Fork Gorge
Straight Fork Gorge
Chimney Rock Gorge
Mountain Fork of Big Stony Gorge
Little Stony Gorge
Guest River Gorge . Many more gorges, and steep ( micro ) creeks are present within the massif, a few highlighted on map ( * ).

*The majesty of Little Stony Gorge itself is enhanced by an array of micro-creeks which plunge into the main gorge. Star Branch being one example, with 520 vertical feet of drop occurring on its first mile upstream of the mainstem gorge of Little Stony ( around 360 feet of plunge within just 0.2 mile ).

Can you conquer the High K**b Hellbender 10k! This heart pumping, leg pounding, mind blowing race is this Saturday, October 4th, at 9:00 am. You still have time to register online or you can register the day of the race starting at 7:30. We have close to 30 people already registered for the event and hope to get even more before the race; even if you are not racing come out and show your support for these brave souls who will attempt to conquer High K**b. **bHellBender2014

Remember this Saturday, September 27th from 10am-4pm is the The Clinch Coalitions 8th Annual Naturalist Rally at Bark Camp Lake. Be sure to show up early and register for some fun and exciting hikes.

The first set of hikes will depart at 10 a.m., with topics including mushrooms, led by Gabrielle Zeiger with the North American Mycological Association; wetlands, led by Lois Boggs from the United States Forestry Service (this hike will be two-and-a-half hours long and will require shoes and clothes that can get wet); and salamanders, led by Walter Smith, associate professor at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The afternoon hikes will begin after the free lunch and include the topics of salamanders; Kitchen Rock, led by Phil Shelton, assistant professor at UVA-Wise; and edible wild plants, led by Phil Meeks from the Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Morning presentations will include information on bees by Mike Yates; High K**b weather by Wayne Browning; and native reptiles of the southeastern United States, led by Chuck Hurd.

The afternoon presentations will cover the topics of raptors by Bays Mountain; invasive species by the Wise Environmental Club; wild mushrooms by Johnny Stanley; and Karen Hartsock will be explore nature with kids. Canoeing will also be available on a limited basis

Tomorrow is the 2014 SWVA Outdoor Expo, at the Heartwood: Southwest Virginia's Artisan Gateway, in Abingdon VA from 10am-4pm. Be sure to get a raffle ticket, with prizes totaling over $3,000! Make sure you stop by the HKCA table, say hi, and grab some cool HKCA merchandise.

Make sure to attend the Southwest Virginia Outdoor Expo. There will be 3 raffle drawings at the expo throughout the day, with some awesome outdoor prizes. All proceeds from the raffle will go to a local group, High K**b Conservation Agency - HKCA. They are helping to keep our trails, like Little Stony Falls Trail, free of trash. Be sure to get out, have a great time, and show your support.

Please visit HKCA's page and click "Like" so you can keep up with ALL of our events and locations. We will have trash pick-ups at Little Stony Falls Trail Wednesday, May 14th and Saturday, May 17th. We provide water, Gatorade, snacks and pick-up supplies at events; hope to see you there.

Conservation of trails, forest and waterways by picking up litter and providing trail maintenance on High K**b Mountain and surrounding area.
