U.S. Forest Service - Idaho Panhandle National Forests

U.S. Forest Service - Idaho Panhandle National Forests The USDA Forest Service page is a combined effort of the National Forest Foundation and the USDA Forest Service.

Comment Policy: https://www.usda.gov/media/blog/usda-comment-policy From the shores of big lakes to the banks of winding rivers, the Idaho Panhandle National Forests create a tapestry of land and water in the handle of North Idaho. The Forest has been and continues to be the lifeline for local communities. Silver, gold and large timber drew settlers to the area. Remnant roads that once led to work

now lead to play, and treasures sought are now recreational - water-based activities, winter uses and the traditional hiking, hunting, fishing and gathering. More than half the state’s surface water is on the Forest. These vast lakes and miles of rivers support a world class fishery. Rich in wildlife, the Forest is home to large game such as elk and deer, as well as species such as grizzly bears, wolves and caribou that add to the sense of "wildness". From lush evergreen mountains to the shores of big waters, the Idaho Panhandle National Forest has a rich history that continues to link families and forest. Historic cabins and lookouts dot the landscape, while significant places such as Hiawatha Trail and Marble Creek Historic District add depth to the heritage. Fire has played, and continues to play an important role in the landscape’s evolution. Forest roads and trails trace the past of American Indians, mining, logging, and Forest Service History.

The Forest Service has sold approximately 3 billion board feet of timber annually over the past 10 years — enough to build 111,000 homes.

By 2028, our goal is 4 billion board feet, or enough for 148,000 homes.

Revett Lake Trail is open 🎉

Another big thanks to the volunteers who spent Saturday clearing more than 100 trees and some massive root balls from the trail system.

It looks like an incredible amount of work.

Winter storms knocked down thousands of trees covering many roads and trails across the national forest.

Please be aware that your destination may be impacted.

Check ahead with the closest ranger district office for travel conditions, or follow our Alerts page for any official safety closures: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/idahopanhandle/alerts

Last week's thunderstorms knocked down quite a few trees across the Priest Lake and Bonners Ferry Ranger Districts.

Forest Service and Northwest Youth Corps crews are busy clearing trails, like the one shown here at Upper Priest Lake.

Due to storms in December and March, and last week's storms, there are still many trees down along trails and smaller, arterial roads across the entire national forest.

Be aware if you're out hiking or trying to drive into a remote spot, that you will likely encounter downed trees.

When selecting a camping spot, be sure to check for hanging or leaning trees above you.

And please report any storm damage to the nearest ranger district office: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/idahopanhandle/offices

A big thank you to our St. Joe fire crews who cleaned up the 1910 Fire Memorial in St. Maries for Memorial Day!

The 1910 Fire Memorial is a historic site in St. Maries, Idaho, dedicated to those lost in the devastating August 20, 1910, fire.

It is located at the Woodlawn Cemetery and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on September 20, 1984.

The memorial contains the graves of 54 firefighters who died in the 1910 fire in north Idaho, and includes an adjacent grave site for eight other Forest Service employees who were killed in the line of duty and never claimed by family members.

Established by the Forest Service, this memorial is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. The site was dedicated as a peaceful location to honor all fallen firefighters - past, present and future.
