Dolly Parton gave the world unforgettable music. But one of her greatest legacies may be the millions of children she helped to discover the joy of reading.

Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995 in honor of her father, who never had the opportunity to learn to read or write. What began in her Tennessee hometown grew into a worldwide literacy effort, providing more than 300 million books to children.

Through the Imagination Library, children receive a free book every month from birth to age 5, building home libraries, creating opportunities for families to read together, and helping children develop an early love of books and learning.

What a legacy: helping generations of children read, learn, and dream. We will miss her.

We're getting excited to start the school year!

It is our pleasure to officially welcome Miss Sarah Wilkey to Dalton Elementary. She will be teaching third grade this year, and we are delighted to have her join our Dalton family after a year of student teaching last fall and spring.

Sarah was born and raised here in Coeur d’Alene, and Dalton Elementary has always held a special place in her heart because . . . she attended Dalton herself! She said, "Teaching runs in my family; both my mom and grandma were educators who inspired my love and joy for teaching." After playing volleyball in college in Colorado, she realized her heart belonged back home, where she could teach in the community that shaped her. She enjoys gardening, cooking, and staying active. After completing her student teaching at Dalton last year, she shared, "It truly felt like home. It’s an absolute dream come true to begin my teaching journey here!"

Please join me in giving Sarah a warm Dalton welcome.

We are sad to share that our original “Good Dog,” Blue, passed away over the summer break due to bone cancer.

Blue was a beloved fixture in our district. He had an effortless way of bringing people together, and we will remember him for his gentle, observant nature and sweet, serious face.

Erin Duncan, Blue’s owner and facility dog program director, asked us to share her gratitude with our district and community for helping give Blue such a beautiful and special life. In turn, we are deeply thankful for the comfort and joy Blue and Erin’s work together brought to our students, families, and staff.

Our thoughts and warmest condolences are with Erin and everyone who loved this incredible dog.

All PAWS up for Blue.
