COFFEYVILLE WATER UPDATE | Let’s Be Water Wise

With the hot and dry weather we’ve been experiencing, we want to give our community an update on Coffeyville’s water supply — and most importantly, let you know that we are NOT under a water conservation watch or water restrictions at this time.

Our primary water source continues to be the Verdigris River, and we are not currently pulling water from Elk City Reservoir. Elk City serves as Coffeyville’s backup water supply if river levels become low, and approximately 500 million gallons are available to Coffeyville if needed.

During periods of hot, dry weather and drought conditions, the City typically takes proactive steps to reduce unnecessary water use. Rather than waiting for conditions to change, we’re doing our part now.

The City is watering Hillcrest Golf Course less, turning off City fountains and asking City departments to use water only when necessary.

We’re asking our community to join us by limiting outdoor watering when possible, fixing leaks and simply being a little more mindful of the water we use.

There is no need for alarm and there are no restrictions. This is simply about being proactive, working together and taking care of a resource our entire community depends on.

A little conservation from each of us can add up to a big difference for Coffeyville.

Same community. Stronger tomorrow. 💙

Be Water Wise — conserve today, protect tomorrow.

📂 CASE FILE OPENED
WADE FLEMONS - Finding His Voice

Every great community has people whose stories reach far beyond its borders. This week's investigation takes us into American rhythm and blues—and to a Coffeyville-born musician whose career would eventually connect him to one of the most recognizable groups in music.

🔍 Upon Our Investigation...
We discovered that Wade Flemons was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1940 before spending much of his youth elsewhere. As a young musician, Flemons began building a career as a singer and songwriter and signed with Vee-Jay Records in the late 1950s.

His early recordings included “Here I Stand,” which reached the national R&B chart, followed by his biggest solo hit, “Easy Lovin’,” which reached the R&B Top 10 in 1960.

But his musical story didn't end there. Flemons later became part of The Salty Peppers, the group that evolved into Earth, Wind & Fire, and performed with the band during its early years.

💡 Did You Know?
Before Earth, Wind & Fire became internationally famous, Wade Flemons was there during the group's formative years—giving this Coffeyville native a fascinating place in the history of American soul and R&B.

📍 Why This Case Matters
Wade Flemons' story shows just how far a journey can travel from its starting point. From being born in Coffeyville to recording nationally charting songs and helping form a group that would become legendary, his place in music history is one more unexpected connection in Coffeyville's story.

📎 Add to the Case: Have a Wade Flemons song, memory, photograph, or piece of local history to share? Add it to our investigation in the comments!

Teamwork is underway at Hillcrest Golf Course!

There’s some work happening at Hillcrest, and this project is a great example of several of our City teams working together behind the scenes.

Our Parks and Hillcrest Golf crew are working on preparations for the installation of new protective netting around the driving range. Before that work moves forward, our Electric and Water teams are also on site to check and locate electric and water lines to ensure the work can be completed safely.

The new protective netting will help keep golf balls within the driving range area, improving safety for golfers and the surrounding area.

The project is funded in part through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant Program. The total project cost is $244,706, with $122,353 provided through grant funding and a required $122,353 local match.

We talk a lot about teamwork, and sometimes it looks just like this — different departments bringing their knowledge and skills together to get a project done safely and the right way. 💙 Coffeyville Municipal Light & Power Coffeyville Public Works Department Coffeyville Parks and Places

Thank you to our Parks, Hillcrest Golf, Electric and Water teams for the work happening at Hillcrest and for everything you do each day to take care of our community.

It takes a team to keep Coffeyville moving forward.

PRESS RELEASE
Coffeyville Awarded $687,240 EPA Grant for Water Treatment Plant

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The City of Coffeyville has been awarded a $687,240 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the first phase of planned improvements at the City’s Water Treatment Plant.

Coffeyville was one of only 10 recipients selected nationwide through the EPA’s Midsize and Large Drinking Water System Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Grant Program. The competitive program helps public water systems strengthen critical infrastructure and prepare for severe weather, natural disasters, power disruptions and cybersecurity threats.

Coffeyville’s project will replace aging transformers and electrical equipment and install a standby generator at the Water Treatment Plant.

The backup power system will help keep the Water Treatment Plant operating during power outages and severe weather, protecting the City’s ability to deliver safe, reliable drinking water to the community.

“Being selected as one of only 10 recipients in the country is a tremendous accomplishment for Coffeyville,” said City Manager Ben Brubaker. “This funding allows us to make important improvements to critical infrastructure while strengthening the reliability of our water system for the residents and businesses who depend on it every day.”

These improvements were already identified as a planned investment in the Water Treatment Plant. The EPA grant will allow the City to move forward with the project while significantly reducing the amount of local funding needed.

The total project cost is estimated at $954,500. The EPA grant will provide $687,240, with the City responsible for the remaining $267,260.

This project represents the first phase of planned improvements at the Water Treatment Plant and is an important step toward strengthening the long-term reliability and resilience of Coffeyville’s drinking water system.

The EPA announced the award on August 31, 2026. Grant funding will be finalized after required legal and administrative requirements are completed.
