Wildfire Update – Monday, May 18 2026

Fire crews spent the majority of Monday conducting “mop-up” operations. This slow, tedious work involves cooling debris areas, cutting down burning logs, and checking for hotspots along fire lines to prevent flare-ups.

Winds remained primarily out of the south through most of the day before shifting from the north late in the afternoon. This sudden change created dangerous fire conditions and threatened the town of Ashland. Multiple task forces were dispatched to the area to assist with fire operations.

Our crews worked until approximately 1:30 a.m. before heading to Dodge City for rest. They will debrief this morning before beginning their return to Coffeyville. New task force teams have since arrived and taken over operations.

Our thoughts are still with the families affected by this terrible incident and with the safety of all the responders in the area still working and traveling home.

On Sunday, May 17th, Coffeyville Firefighters departed at 7:00 a.m. to assist with wildfire operations in southwest Kansas. Squad 2, a Type 6 Brush Engine, deployed as part of a Wyandotte County Task Force alongside Columbus Fire Rescue.

The Task Force — made up of personnel from Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department, Bonner Springs Fire Department, Edwardsville Fire Department, Coffeyville Fire Department, and Columbus Fire Rescue — arrived in Meade Sunday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Crews were immediately assigned to the fire line, where they continued fire suppression operations until approximately 10:00 p.m.

Following operations, crews traveled to Dodge City for overnight rest before reporting back to the Meade area this morning for continued wildfire response efforts.

Please keep all affected by these fires in your thoughts and prayers and for the safety of all the first responders working in the area.
