Cohasset Police Investigating Death in Whitney Woods

COHASSET — Cohasset Police and Fire responded to Whitney Woods on Monday, August 17, 2026, after a 9-1-1 caller reported finding an unresponsive person on a remote trail within the park.

The call was received at approximately 10:31 a.m. First-arriving officers hiked approximately 1.5 miles into the park over rugged terrain, where they located a man in his early 70s who had sustained injuries. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Cohasset Police deployed the department’s two off-road UTVs to access the remote location and transport personnel and equipment. Officers later assisted personnel from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner with removing the deceased from the wooded area.

A section of Whitney Woods was closed for approximately 3½ hours while investigators worked at the scene.

At this time, there is nothing suspicious surrounding the death and there is no danger to the public. The circumstances remain under active investigation by Cohasset Police detectives and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Norfolk
County District Attorney’s Office.

Next of kin are being notified. No further information will be released at this time.

COMMUTER RAIL TRAIN STRIKES VEHICLE AT NORTH MAIN STREET CROSSING — NO INJURIES REPORTED

COHASSET — At approximately 12:23 a.m., Cohasset Police received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting that an MBTA Commuter Rail train on the Greenbush Line, traveling toward Scituate, had struck a motor vehicle at the North Main Street grade crossing.

Cohasset Police officers and Cohasset Firefighter/Paramedics responded and found a heavily damaged 2016 Toyota Camry on the rail bed. The commuter train came to a stop just short of the Cohasset MBTA Commuter Rail Station.

The preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Camry, a 33-year-old Mansfield man who was delivering packages for an online delivery service, apparently made a wrong turn onto the railroad tracks and became stuck.

As the train approached, the driver recognized the danger and was able to exit the vehicle and move to safety before the collision. He was not injured.

Approximately 15 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported among the passengers or train crew.

The Camry sustained significant damage and was totaled.

North Main Street was closed for more than two hours while Cohasset Police and MBTA Transit Police investigated the crash and crews removed the vehicle and debris from the railroad tracks.

“This could very easily have been a fatal incident,” said Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley. “The driver made the critically important decision to get out of the vehicle and move away from the tracks rather than remain inside or attempt to free the car as the train approached. A vehicle can be replaced. A life cannot. We are extremely fortunate that no one was injured.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Cohasset Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and MBTA Transit Police.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT & POWER OUTAGE – JERUSALEM ROAD 🚨

The Cohasset Police Department is advising residents that Jerusalem Road is currently closed to all traffic between Wadleigh Park and Hull Street due to a fallen tree that brought down a utility pole near the intersection of Jerusalem Road and Windy Hill Road.

This incident has also caused a power outage affecting portions of North Cohasset.

Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency crews and utility personnel work to safely clear the roadway and restore electrical service.

National Grid crews are on scene and actively working on repairs. For the latest information on power restoration times, please monitor the National Grid Outage Map.

Today it was an honor to join Commander Greg Lennon, Sergeant Jeff Treanor (Ret.), and many current and former colleagues at the Weymouth Police Department to celebrate the retirement of Captain Rick “Abby” Abbadessa after nearly four decades of outstanding public service.

Captain Abbadessa began his law enforcement career with the Hull Police Department before joining the Cohasset Police Department in 1993. He later transferred to the Weymouth Police Department in the mid-1990s, where he steadily rose through the ranks, earning the respect of those he served alongside and the community he protected.

For a time, the four of us in this photo all worked together in Cohasset and were affectionately (or perhaps not so affectionately!) known as “The Young Turks.” It was a great reunion filled with stories, laughter, and appreciation for a remarkable career.

Congratulations, Abby, on an exceptional career and a well-earned retirement. Wishing you and your family many years of health, happiness, and new adventures. Thank you for your friendship and for your dedicated service to the communities of Hull, Cohasset, and Weymouth.
