Treatment Facility Operating Under High Flow Plan

The wastewater treatment facility is currently unable to produce sufficient treated water to keep pace with incoming flow. As a result, the facility has been implementing its state-approved High Flow Plan daily to manage operating conditions.

To improve treatment capacity and maintain operations, the facility is:

· Maximizing flow diversion to Hull;

· Proactively cleaning treatment membranes to increase production capacity; and

· Replacing associated equipment as needed.

At this time, the incoming wastewater is receiving primary treatment and chemical disinfection prior to discharge to the harbor.

State and federal regulatory agencies, as well as the Department of Marine Fisheries, have been notified and are aware of the ongoing situation.

The facility will continue to monitor conditions closely and take all appropriate measures to restore full treatment capacity as quickly as possible. Further updates will be provided as warranted.

Congratulations to the Cohasset High School Girls' Lacrosse team, who defeated Norwell 9-6 on Thursday, June 11th, to capture the Division III State Title under the direction of second-year head coach Kara Connerty.

The girls had lost in the finals to Norwell by a goal in 2025, but redeemed themselves on the efforts of a strong senior class that includes Kate Greer (UMASS), Avery Regan (Bucknell), Addy Andrews (Union) and Aine Norton. This is the fourth State Championship for the girls, who won in 2017, 2019, and 2024.

The Health Department is aware of the season’s first heat wave expected over the next few days.

As temperatures rise, residents are encouraged to take steps to stay safe and help prevent heat-related illness. Remember to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothing, check on older adults and neighbors, and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

The Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health offers helpful tools and resources to prepare for hot weather and recognize the signs of heat-related illness.

The Cohasset Health Department has received reports of increased tick activity. As residents spend more time outdoors this spring and summer, please take steps to protect yourself, your family, and your pets.

Ticks in Massachusetts can spread diseases such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, tularemia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Before heading outside, consider using insect repellent, wearing light-colored clothing, staying on cleared trails, and checking yourself, children, and pets for ticks after spending time outdoors.

Please review the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s tick-borne disease prevention information for helpful tips on protecting yourself and what to do if you find a tick: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/tick-borne-disease-prevention

Cohasset Water Department Drought Advisory:

Cohasset is currently experiencing abnormally dry conditions that are impacting our surface water supplies. The Water Department is therefore implementing VOLUNTARY conservation measures and requests that all customers be prudent with their use of water.

The Cohasset Water Department further recommends limiting nonessential outdoor water use, number one being irrigation of lawns by means of sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems, to an odd-even day basis whereby customers with odd numbered street addresses irrigate lawns on odd numbered days, and those with even numbered addresses irrigate on even numbered days.

Timing is also important for lawn watering. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recommends “to the extent feasible, all summer outdoor water use should take place before 9 am and after 5 pm when evaporation and evapotranspiration rates are lower”.

As part of our current Water Management Act Permit, DEP has approved a set of criteria for issuing this advisory.

They are:
1. Precipitation (two cumulative months below 65% of normal)
2. Stream Flow (minimum target flows not consistently maintained)
3. Storage ( less than 365 days storage).

As of June 1st we are below the threshold for precipitation. During April and May we received 56% of normal historic rainfall, hence this advisory.

Thank you for your help with protecting Cohasset’s natural resources.
