This Saturday, June 11th, join the Spindle City Historic Society on a two-hour guided walking tour exploring the “Path Through History” along the Delaware Avenue Heritage Corridor. See sites and hear stories of Native peoples’ settlements and a riverfront trading post; Dutch settlements; a Revolutionary War route; a boat building shipyard; textile manufacturing, railroad history, and more. They are hosting two tours:
11 a.m. -- beginning at the Van Schaick Mansion to Peebles Island
2 p.m. – beginning at Peebles Island to the Van Schaick Mansion.

A trolley will traverse Delaware Avenue between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to transport visitors between locations along the route, free of charge. It is all part of Saturday’s “Path through History” event along Delaware Avenue in Cohoes.

A coalition of community organizations will be showcasing the corridor’s rich history with free re-enactments, walks, talks, and performances at Peebles Island State Park, at the Van Schaick Mansion, and in between.

Saturday, June 11th explore Peebles Island, including free guided tours at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. with a focus on early Native American settlements, early Dutch settlers, the Revolutionary War fortifications, industry on the island, and the many other features of the historic site. (Gather at map at north end of parking lot.). It is all part of Saturday’s “Path through History” events along Delaware Avenue in Cohoes from 11:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

The 1.5 mile stretch of Delaware Avenue along the Hudson River between the Van Schaick Mansion and Peebles Island in Cohoes includes sites and stories of Native peoples’ settlements and a riverfront trading post; Dutch settlements; a Revolutionary War route; a boat building shipyard; textile manufacturing, railroad history, and more.

A coalition of community organizations will be showcasing the corridor’s rich history with free re-enactments, walks, talks, and performances.

Interesting fact: The Van Schaick Mansion in Cohoes served as the headquarters of the Continental Army in the months preceding the Battles of Saratoga in l777, and hosted 5,000 –10,000 Continental Soldiers and the leadership of the war.

You can learn about the Van Schaick Mansion and more on Saturday, June 11 as you explore a “Path Through History” along the Delaware Avenue Heritage Corridor in Cohoes – from Van Schaick Mansion to Peebles Island. The events are free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include Native American storytellers, Revolutionary War re-enactors, cannon firings, and more.

As we conclude our 150th Anniversary year, we applaud all who assisted in marking our history during this historic year.

A special "Thank you" to the Spindle City Historic Society members who devoted enormous volunteer time and energy collaborating with us on content for many of the 365 Facts of the Day, and more.

Throughout our 150th anniversary year we featured Cohoes history each and every day via Facts of the Day. We thank all who contributed to this effort, particularly Daniele Cherniak, Patricia McDonough, and Anne Marie Koschnick of the Spindle City Historic Society.

Fact of the day for December 30, 2020

As 2020 comes to a close, and we near completion of the year-long series of Facts of the Day, we note the elected leadership in Cohoes, from the first elected officials, to those currently serving in office.

The image is a photo of the actual record of the first meeting of the new Mayor and Councilmembers. Note that several of the names are familiar to us to this day…

In our 150th year we are represented by Mayor Bill Keeler, and Aldermen representing the First Ward: William Smith; Second Ward: Donald Russell; Third Ward: Christopher Briggs; Fourth Ward: Council President William McCarthy; Fifth Ward: Adam Biggs; and Sixth Ward: Justin Alesio.

Fact of the day for December 29, 2020

This year we mark the 150th anniversary of the formation of Cohoes as a city, but our history began long before, with the settlement of members of the Mohawk Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. The land around the Cohoes Falls is sacred territory to the Mohawk Nation, rich in history.

Do you know anyone who was in the Cohoes Polish National Alliance all-girls Drum & Bugle Corps in the 1930’s & 1940’s? or who played on the Cohoes PNA sponsored baseball team who were undefeated champions of Northeastern NY in 1932?... or danced with the Polka Dolls and Guys Dance Group formed in 1981?.. and can you recall their amazing dinners and food at the bazaars? Fact of the day for December 24, 2020

Yet again this year – though navigating the COVID pandemic -- Members of the Cohoes Elks distributed food for the holidays to more than 150 families, just one of their many acts of generosity during this year. A headline on this day in the 1919 Cohoes Republican newspaper caught our attention, because it was about a similar food and present distribution by the Elks Lodge during that holiday season. These volunteer efforts of the Elks - like so many of the city’s civic, fraternal, and religious organizations - continuously strengthen our community.
