On today’s episode of Speaking of Alzheimer's, we’re joined by Amy Lukac of Bridgewater, New Jersey, who shares her unexpected journey into caregiving after becoming her mother’s primary caregiver overnight. She opens up about navigating caregiving, a complicated family history, and the realities of supporting a parent living with dementia. We are excited to announce that Todd Shimkus has accepted the position of chair of the Northeastern New York Chapter's Board of Directors. Shimkus is the president/CEO of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce in Saratoga Springs. He has been an active volunteer with the Northeastern New York Chapter since 2017, when he first participated with his mother, Amy Shimkus, in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Queensbury. When his mother’s 10-year journey with Alzheimer’s ended in 2022, Shimkus and his sister, Tracy Cheifetz, formed Amy’s Army with teams wearing purple camouflage shirts and hats in Walks held in Queensbury and Reston, Virginia. Over the course of four years, Amy’s Army has raised more than $100,000, and Shimkus and Cheifetz were invited to join their respective Alzheimer’s Association chapter boards. Shimkus also published a book titled "I’m Not Ready for This" with all proceeds from book sales donated to Amy’s Army.
