Timeline of Cokeburg Borough’s purchase and demolition of 1 Washington Street
Prior to 2022 – The vacant four-unit apartment building falls into disrepair.
August 2022 – Property is listed on Washington County repository sale list after failing to sell at previous tax-related sales. Delinquent taxes owed on the property exceeded $11,000.
Fall 2022 – The Borough of Cokeburg worked with the Washington County Tax Claim Bureau to purchase the property, with the intent to seek grant money for demolition of the building. The building was purchased for just under $300.
October 2023 – Borough applied for a Washington County LSA grant to fund the demolition.
February 27, 2024 – Borough is awarded a $50,000 grant to demolish the building and restore the lot. Washington County redevelopment authority is to handle contracts with Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) & bidding arrangements. It will take through September to receive contracts from DCED.
April 2, 2024 – The building is damaged by a fire. Borough discusses if the demolition timeline can be prioritized. The only option to accelerate the timeline is for the borough to cancel the grant and fund the demolition from other sources. The building is evaluated by an inspector and found to not be in danger of collapse.
December 30, 2024 – Bids for demolition are due through the redevelopment authority.
January 10, 2025 – Demolition bid awarded to W.J. Woodhouse and Sons, Inc
March 7, 2025 – Demolition of the building begins.
March 13, 2025 – Demolition is completed and inspected by Kerry Fox of the Redevelopment Authority.
