The loud gunshot heard approximately 9 PM tonight around the 100 block of 1st North Street was Officer Stocking discharging his duty firearm at a porcupine.

A call came in around 8:45 PM that a person taking their dog outside observed the rodent in their front yard. Officer Stocking arrived and attempted to get it to go towards the fields just North of town. However, the porcupine turned back towards the houses and other animals which is when Officer Stocking put it down.

Please be aware of rodents (porcupines, skunks, etc.) being in the area, so if you have kids or pets be cautious when being outside.

Power has been restored. Thank you to all those who called it in.

As of this time the reason and slope of the power outage has not been disclosed to us. As of this time, they estimate the power to be restored at 4 PM. If we receive any more information we will let you know. If anyone needs anything until the power goes out, reach out to us and we will see about getting you the help that you need.

A resolution banning open burning and fireworks beginning July 14 was passed by the Lincoln County Commissioners on Tuesday, July 7 during the regularly scheduled Lincoln County Commission Meeting.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have gotten complaints about people in town being unsafe on dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. We would like to reiterate safe riding and obeying traffic safety laws. If these complaints continue and violations are observed, traffic stops will be made with the possibility of citations being issued for the infractions. The Police Department is aware of the small town “Let kids be kids” mindset, however safety concerns come first. The Cokeville Police Department was able to attend the candlelight vigil for fallen officers at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. during National Police Week last week. This invitation was extended to the department to honor fallen Cokeville Town Marshal Daniel C Hansen who tragically died in the line of duty June 21, 1912. Marshal Hansen went to P.W. Olsen Ranch on horseback to investigate a $1,500 blackmail letter on the evening of June 20. Upon arrival, Marshal Hansen observed a figure running in the shadows and ordered them to stop. Marshal Hansen was then shot at and struck, knocking him off his horse. Uinta Sheriff arrived after some time and found Hansen, who was taken to the hospital and died the following day. Marshal Hansen was honored at the state memorial level however was not recognized on the national level until this year. Marshal Hansen’s name was etched into the memorial wall this year along with 362 other fallen officers being remembered, some End of Watch dates going back to the 1860s. A plaque for Marshal Hansen, which was in the care of Stella Stutz and was graciously donated to the department by the Toomer family, can be found outside the Police Department at Town Hall.

This is a reminder now that the weather is starting to warm up to follow the watering/irrigation ordinances by only watering from the hours of 5 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 11 PM. Any under ground watering system may be used during the hours of 11 PM to 5 AM. Attached is a copy of city ordinance 8-130 and 8-131. Cokeville Police Department’s K9 Harley has received donation of body armor

Cokeville Police Department, WY - K9 Harley has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Harley’s vest was embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,397 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. WATER LINE UPDATE

The water line for Main Street and Post Street has temporarily been turned back on for the night. The water however will be turned off again at approximately 8 AM for the final repairs of the line. The intersection will still be closed. Thank you for everyone’s patience while the line is fixed.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

There is a water line break at the corner of Main Street and Post Street in front of the Post Office. Please be advised the corner is closed and allow for an alternative route until it is opened again.

As the late winter snow falls upon us, remember that there’s no parking on any streets from 4 am to 8 am to allow for the snow plows to remove snow. This goes for Main Street and all other side streets within the town. This will be in effect until April.
