Vermont State Guard

Vermont State Guard The Vermont State Guard (VSG) is the all-volunteer state guard of Vermont. As such, our unpaid volunteer activities take place only within the state. Richard D.

The Vermont State Guard
The Vermont State Guard Motto is “Ready to Serve.” We do this at the direction of the Governor of Vermont through the Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard. We are men and women, ages 17 to 80, former military service or experienced civilian, possessing the necessary skills, knowledge, and commitment to plan for organizational readiness and perform multiple tasks t

o support the Vermont National Guard in emergency or service events. Who We Are

Commanding General’s Statement:
The Vermont State Guard is comprised of dedicated volunteer men and women, committed to serving the State of Vermont. It is this passion to service that makes the Vermont State Guard a cut above. As the threat to our national and local security increases with recent events and an unsettling global climate, and because homeland security is a national priority, the role of the Vermont State Guard, along with other state guards, becomes ever more important. When substantial portions of the Vermont National Guard (Army and Air) become deployed outside of the state, the Vermont State Guard may be called upon to assume responsibilities of the National Guard during their absence. By order of the Governor, and under the direction of the Adjutant General, the Vermont State Guard may be called upon to provide services during a state emergency, or to perform a humanitarian role in special situations. Whatever the call, it is incumbent upon the Vermont State Guard to be ready. The Vermont State Guard is one of many state guards throughout the country. Morrison , Major General
Commanding General, Vermont State Guard

Today, the Vermont State Guard pauses to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the courage of those who stood in defense of it. We remember the fallen, we honor their service, and we keep their legacy alive through our continued commitment to duty, community, and country.

To the families who carry the weight of loss, we stand with you and thank you for the sacrifices your loved ones made for all Americans.
Please join us today in taking a moment to reflect, remember, and honor those who never came home.

Congratulations to B.G. Henry "Hank" Harder on being selected as the next Adjutant General for the Vermont National Guard! We look forward to working with you!

Thank you M.G. Greg Knight for your many years of dedicated service to your community, state and nation. Enjoy your retirement, we look forward to seeing you around.

⭐️ MEET VERMONT'S NEW ADJUTANT GENERAL ⭐️

Please join us in congratulating Brig. Gen. Henry “Hank” Harder on being elected as the next Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard.

On Thursday, the Vermont House and Senate selected Harder to serve as the state’s senior military leader. In this role, he will oversee both the Vermont Air National Guard and the Vermont Army National Guard, leading a force of approximately 2,700 service members and maintaining the state’s military records.

Brigadier General Harder, a Shelburne resident, has served as the Deputy Adjutant General since 2024 under Maj. Gen. Gregory Knight, who is stepping down after seven years of dedicated service.

Harder was chosen following a joint legislative vote, receiving strong support over fellow candidate Col. Roger “Brent” Zeigler. He will begin his two-year term in March.

Vermont is the only state where the Adjutant General is elected by lawmakers rather than appointed by the governor, highlighting the state’s unique tradition and strong legislative partnership with the National Guard.

With extensive leadership experience and a continued commitment to the Guard, Harder is well positioned to lead Vermont’s soldiers and airmen into the future while supporting missions at home and abroad.
