Colchester Technical Rescue Colchester Technical Rescue:
A volunteer organization serving community, and state, in the areas of

Organized in 1989, Colchester Rescue Squad created a dive rescue team in cooperation with the Police Department and Harbormaster. By 1991, we acquired a small surplus van to carry technical rescue equipment, as well as a small inflatable Zodiac motorboat. Over the years, we have acquired more equipment, training, and responsibility. We now provide the following services to the Town of Colchester,

Chittenden County, and the State of Vermont:

- Dive rescue (of all disciplines)
- Swift water rescue
- Back country / wilderness search and rescue
- High angle rope rescue
- Large animal rescue

Today, we are known as Colchester Technical Rescue. We are a fully volunteer organization comprised of firefighters, EMT's, paramedics, police officers, doctors, nurses, and even a veterinary doctor as well as many other vital professions. We run roughly 50 calls per year and provide mutual aid to a number of local services including Stowe Mountain Rescue. The team is recognized throughout the state for its work in water and ice rescue emergencies, as well as many other hazardous terrain rescues. We continue to strive for excellence in all of our specialties so we can provide safe, quick, and effective services for the citizens and visitors to the State of Vermont.

Today’s rope rescue training involved the use of ground based operations in the removal of a subject from a narrow, 40’ deep shaft. Ground based operations are great in that they allow the rescuers to ascend with minimal equipment in order to perform the rescue. a lowering system was used to get the rescuer to the subject. The subject and rescuer were then removed from the shaft using a mechanical Advantage system. Once on top of the structure, a skate block system was utilized to send the subject back to the ground while moving them away from the structure.

We train so that we’re ready we when needed.
