In a down economy more and more families are struggling to stay afloat. Unfortunately on weekends empty refrigerators and pantries await many of our area children. The reality of hungry children in our school district has inspired this program to take shape. With this in mind volunteers in our communit
y are working with schools in the South Elementary School and the Middle School of West Prairie School District 103 to provide bags of food over the weekend for these children at risk of hunger. The BackPack Program is coordinated and supported by volunteers of all faiths, and caring people in our community. The children who are recipients of the program are identified by the administrators of the West Prairie Schools in Colchester. Letters are sent home to parents and the children receive a weekend sack of food when the parents return the permission slip. The administrator provides the BackPack program volunteers with the number of sacks of food needed and confidentiality is maintained. Every week the volunteers meet and pack the sacks of food for the children of Colchester schools. The food has a shelf life and a effort is made to easy open and meet nutrition guide lines. The School year 2015-2016 ended with 59 sacks a week being handed out to the children in the schools at West Prairie in Colchester. Your support is critical to the success of the BackPack Program and we appreciate any donation no matter the amount. A donation of $5.00 will pack a sack for one child a weekend. The BackPack program hopes that sponsors will consider feeding a child for a week, month, or year.
