Just after 1630 this evening, Saint Michael’s Fire and Rescue were dispatched into Winooski for the report of fire showing from a single story private dwelling. Engine 8 responded on the 2nd alarm card with a crew of 8 personnel and arrived on the scene in under 58 seconds from time of dispatch. As the first arriving 2nd alarm unit, the crew of E8 completed aggressive interior fire attack and overhauled the structure. SMR A2 served as the standby unit for the duration of the incident while A1 was back-staffed by off duty members of Fire Rescue, and responded to multiple incidents in place of A2.

Units returned to service at Sutton Fire House shortly after 1900. 🏴‍☠️

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of longtime Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Company Chief and St. Michael’s Fire and Rescue Honorary Member, Sandy Ladd.

Sandy’s impact on the fire service in Vermont and beyond was immense. He touched the lives of countless SMFR student members, right up until his final days and we’re sure his legacy will continue to do the same.

With a lifetime of service, Sandy fully dedicated himself to helping others. He often volunteered to cover duty shifts so students could spend time with their families during the holidays, or ran duty side-by-side with them as a mentor and role model. Just as often, he would simply stop by the station to check in on us.

We are deeply grateful for everything Sandy did for our organization and the many other organizations he was a part of. While he may no longer walk through our station doors, we know he will always be with us.

Chief, thank you for everything. Rest In Peace.

Cassie and Hannah — who play for the Women’s Soccer team and are Rescue Unit members — had their senior game yesterday. They took the win (4-2) over Southern Connecticut. Other members were there to support! Cassie is the Rescue Captain and Hannah is an EMT; both are invaluable assets to the department! Congrats, you make us proud!

To all the incoming first-year students, we’d like to extend a very warm welcome from all of us at Fire and Rescue. St. Michael’s Fire & Rescue is an entirely student run organization that provides emergency medical services and fire suppression to not only the St. Mike’s campus, but several surrounding towns. We're staffed 24/7/365; making us one of the busiest fire stations in the state of Vermont. We’ll be on campus this morning to help with move in, but please feel free to stop in to learn more anytime this weekend. (We’re right across Route 15 from the McCarthy Arts Center) We look forward to meeting all of you and hope you can be a part of this amazing organization.

SMR had the opportunity of attending the National Collegiate EMS Conference in Baltimore this weekend. SMR attended many EMS lectures, networked with other collegiate agencies and had lots of fun. SMFR was also recognized for their 55th anniversary that will be coming up this year! What a great weekend! 🚑🚨
