Little bit of story time here.

Brigadier General Hank Harder (Deputy Adjutant General) of the VT National Guard went out of his way durring the busy holiday season to send me a postcard offering his condolences about my father's passing in November. I was truley touched and deeply moved by this gesture. Me, being VT State Guard not VT National Guard was very moved by this. A man, who is second in command to a man who is in charge of 4,000 +/- troops had felt the need to go out of his way to send me this, a sentiment that will last a lifetime.

Today, Brigadier General Harder was chosen to be the next leader of the Vermont National Guard, a man of integrity, honor and selflessness. This news was beyond exciting for me to learn.

To my friends I serve along with in the National Guard, your new leader is a man who truley cares about his troops, a man that will guide you all through the rigors of battle and a man that is a class act. In conclusion I would just like to say Congratulations Brigadier General Harder. This is a very well deserved position.

⭐️ MEET VERMONT'S NEW ADJUTANT GENERAL ⭐️

Please join us in congratulating Brig. Gen. Henry “Hank” Harder on being elected as the next Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard.

On Thursday, the Vermont House and Senate selected Harder to serve as the state’s senior military leader. In this role, he will oversee both the Vermont Air National Guard and the Vermont Army National Guard, leading a force of approximately 2,700 service members and maintaining the state’s military records.

Brigadier General Harder, a Shelburne resident, has served as the Deputy Adjutant General since 2024 under Maj. Gen. Gregory Knight, who is stepping down after seven years of dedicated service.

Harder was chosen following a joint legislative vote, receiving strong support over fellow candidate Col. Roger “Brent” Zeigler. He will begin his two-year term in March.

Vermont is the only state where the Adjutant General is elected by lawmakers rather than appointed by the governor, highlighting the state’s unique tradition and strong legislative partnership with the National Guard.

With extensive leadership experience and a continued commitment to the Guard, Harder is well positioned to lead Vermont’s soldiers and airmen into the future while supporting missions at home and abroad.
