The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Ghana-backed resolution recognising transatlantic slavery as the gravest crime against humanity.

The measure passed with strong global support but faced opposition from the United States and several European countries.

While not legally binding, the resolution calls for dialogue on reparations, apologies and compensation.

The vote marks the strongest UN action yet on acknowledging slavery and its lasting global impact.
