A 4-H Connection in the Middle of Nowhere 💚🍀
Sometimes the 4-H family shows up when you need it most.
Today, our Harvey County Extension Agent, Bonnie Brewer, and her family were traveling home from Texas when their vehicle broke down at a gas station in Coleman, Oklahoma. The starter had failed, leaving them stranded far from home.
After prayers, phone calls, and a lot of uncertainty, help arrived in an unexpected way.
A man wearing a chicken-themed shirt struck up a conversation. As it turned out, he had just come from the community’s annual 4-H and FFA Chicken Auction across the road. One conversation led to another, and before long, the local 4-H and FFA community had stepped in to help.
They gave Bonnie’s husband, Wes, a ride to the nearest parts store 20 miles away, helped get a new starter, and welcomed Bonnie and the kids into their community building while repairs were made. They shared a meal, offered encouragement, and turned a stressful situation into a reminder of the kindness that exists in rural communities.
To make the story even better, Bonnie discovered the wife of the family who helped them is a fellow K-State graduate.
The vehicle is fixed, the family is safely back on the road, and we’re all reminded that 4-H is so much more than projects and meetings—it’s a network of people who step up, lend a hand, and treat strangers like neighbors.
Thank you to the Coleman OK 4H and FFA community for your generosity and kindness. 💚🍀
