SCAM Warning: Fraudulent Communications Related to Traffic Violations
The Coleman County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports from citizens regarding suspicious text messages and phone calls. These communications claim to be from the Texas Supreme Court, the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS), or the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TXDMV), and reference unresolved traffic violations. Please be advised that these agencies will never contact individuals via text message or telephone about unresolved traffic matters.
If you receive a text message, email, or phone call purporting to be from any of the above agencies, do not click on any links, and never provide credit card, debit card, or banking information. Additionally, requests for payment regarding toll roads via text, email, or phone are also fraudulent. Legitimate toll road bills are sent by mail, and toll authorities do not possess your phone number or email address, as this information is not included in vehicle registration or driver license records.
If you are uncertain about the validity of any communication, contact your local law enforcement, TXDPS, or TXDMV directly for confirmation. Please note that official TXDPS and TXDMV websites always end with “.gov”. (example: https://www.dps.texas.gov)
We have attached one of the messages received via text. We have also attached statement from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website where they state “TxDMV does not administer toll roads, issue traffic citations, or collect fees via text message. Any messages claiming unpaid fees or fines from TxDMV are fraudulent.”
