City of Colfax Provides Update on Public Space Improvement Projects

The City of Colfax is currently undertaking several improvement projects throughout our public spaces to protect infrastructure, enhance community gathering areas, and prepare for future amenities.

🌳On South Auburn Street, the tree located in front of City Hall has been removed, and the one in front of the Lot of Art will be removed as their root systems had outgrown the available planting areas.
The expanding roots were beginning to damage sidewalks and roadways and had the potential to impact the foundations of nearby buildings. Removing these trees is a proactive decision to prevent further infrastructure damage and avoid significantly more costly repairs in the future.
To preserve the welcoming character of the area, decorative flower planters have been installed in their place. These planters complement the landscaping and design of the outdoor seating areas on North Main Street while continuing to add color and beauty to downtown.

🌳The large tree in Arbor Park, adjacent to the Colfax Library, was recently trimmed as part of ongoing improvements to that space. Our hope is to once again utilize this area as the community Christmas tree location, continuing a tradition many residents fondly remember.

🌳On Railroad Street, residents will soon notice the removal of two large trees and excavation work. This work marks the beginning of the future home of the Colfax Caboose and the Colfax Walkable Museum, a project spearheaded by the Colfax Heritage Museum in partnership with the City. Plans for the site also include a pear orchard, additional landscaping, and other greenery to create an attractive and inviting public space.

Whenever the City removes trees or landscaping—whether to protect infrastructure or accommodate public improvement projects—we are committed to replacing greenery whenever feasible. Our goal is to reintroduce trees, landscaping, or other plantings in the same area or nearby in locations that are safer, more sustainable, and better suited for long-term growth.

We value our trees and the shade they provide just as much as our community does. Every decision involving our urban landscape is made carefully, balancing public safety, infrastructure preservation, aesthetics, environmental stewardship, and the continued enhancement of our community spaces.

We appreciate your patience during construction and look forward to sharing more updates as these projects progress.
