INFORMATION RELEASE

August 6, 2026

From: Chief Covey

At approximately 7:00PM today, emergency services were called to the Colfax Travel Center, 1407 N Walnut, for a report of a stabbing. Responding officers arrived to find 4 injured parties. Emergency medical services were also dispatched to care for the injured.

All four individuals reside in the same community in California and a dispute between them started there sometime in the last week. They met up again in Colfax and the dispute continued in the parking lot of the Travel Center.

Initial investigation revealed the 4 injured parties were the only ones involved. A box cutter, believed to be the weapon used by one of the parties, was recovered at the scene with the help of a K-9 unit from the Jasper County Sheriff’s office. All 4 individuals were transported to Des Moines and Newton hospitals with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries and one of the 4 was taken into custody for assault.

Please understand this investigation is in the preliminary stages and there was much difficulty in learning what happened due to a language barrier between the involved. At this time, there is no information to believe there is further threat to the public.

Assisting agencies include: Prairie City Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Monroe Police Department, Colfax Fire Department, Prairie City Fire Department, and the Mitchellville Fire Department.

What an amazing National Night Out we had last night! Despite the rain, our community showed up, and that means everything to me.
