Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA), at its best, doesn't leave talent on the bench.

It should not be a strategic marketing message. It shouldn't mean putting small businesses, the underrepresented and/or underserved, through even more hoops to appear in a "thinking about it" phase. Rather, efforts should be streamlined to produce impactful immediate and long-lasting results.

DEIA means having more perspectives and harmonizing them to optimize outcomes. It is continuously improving on Universal Design.

DEIA doesn't come at a sunk cost if we see it as an investment. It shouldn't be a stretch if done genuinely because it means we all see the person and not just a goal.

Given the opportunity, DEIA increases the pie for everyone who wants to work, innovate and make a difference.

Let's applaud large firms that have worked with under-represented, under-served, and often disrespected populations for years. For those corporate leaders who have announced their recent efforts - what took you so long? We've got work to do.

In the social sciences research and public policy realm, many firms haven't kept up with the public's needs and the fast-paced world we are in now. With an intuitive DEIA framework, we can get there faster.

Know that small firms and sometimes differing voices can provide insight and value to making business cases based on evidence that can help DEIA work for all of us. It would be not-so ironic if small and diverse firms were not included in equity and inclusion discussions, projects and leadership. Don't let that happen and think of diverse firms more than in a DEIA context but more so as parts of an optimized future.
