#sagecoaliton is happy to share that #advocacy worked! #internationalstudents visas will no longer be at risk from the ICE rules that was rescinded in court today! But in court today, ICE reversed course and raised the white flag, announcing that it is rescinding the July 6th directive and returning to the status quo. Although the judge had earlier tipped her hand that she thought the universities challenging the directive had a strong case, the retreat by ICE came as a surprise. The July 6th directive was itself a sudden reversal of ICE’s March 13th statement that said that ICE was suspending limits on online education during the Covid-19 crisis. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexandrasternlicht/2020/07/14/white-house-drops-plan-to-deport-international-students-attending-online-only-classes/#12406d7b7c94 #gradterps #umdgsg

Ask your school or graduate student organization to release a statement speaking out against the ruling. Nearly 60 universities have already filed a brief backing challenge to the ICE rule on international students. #gradterps #umdgsg

Paint Night hosted by Nicole!!!

Friday (07/09) from 4:30-6 pm over Zoom

Paint sea turtles on a beach to raise funds for an organization addressing systemic racism in STEM — Pathways to Science — if people wanted, they could donate the same amount they would either spend on a drink ($5-10) or on a paint-and-sip class ($35-55).

For supplies, same as last time: acrylic paint in primary colors (black, white, red, yellow, blue), some paint brushes (ideally one each of large, medium, and small), a water cup, palette (paper plate or old tupperware lid works), paper towels (newspaper also recommended to put beneath your painting), & a canvas of any size (can substitute with heavy paper if needed).

07/06/2020

Dear Annie Rappeport,

As your term as President of GSG (Graduate Student Government) has recently come to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard work and commitment in building and growing GSG to what it is today. Being President of GSG is the toughest role, and you took on your Presidential duties with dedication, grace, and seriousness.

Over the last two years, your stewardship of GSG has been characterized by innovative ideas, strategic thinking and, most valuable, your tireless efforts to increase the credibility and visibility of GSG in the UMD community as well as with the surrounding communities of UMD.

The resulting recognition has become an asset to GSG, and the relationships you have fostered with our partners and stakeholders will ensure GSG will prosper and continue to offer opportunities for graduate students to come.

GSG has improved on your watch with the increase of our membership, the building and growing team of committed individuals inside the organization, improving and building a great relationship with our community partners, and overall graduate student advocacy on UMD campus.

We are most grateful for your active leadership as a judicious steward of GSG. We know you always carefully deliberated on matters before GSG and UMD organizations, even when the decisions were difficult. You leave GSG, a better organization and on a strong footing for those who follow you.

It is our great pleasure on behalf of GSG members and the Executive Committee to thank you for your dedication and the great job you have accomplished in your two year term as President and wish you all the very best in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Graduate Student Government

In these uncertain times, you may feel anxious about your future.
That's why the Undocumented Student Program and the Graduate and Undergraduate Legal Aid Offices are teaming up with two local attorneys to provide some information and to answer questions from undocumented and international students and community members.

First, you will hear from Mark Shmueli, Esq., an immigration attorney, with an update on immigration law and policies, including the upcoming the Supreme Court's DACA decision. Joyce Smithey, Esq., an employment attorney, will address issues related to collecting unemployment and other concerns. Finally, Stamp staff will share information about the abundance of resources available to students and the community both on- and off-campus. Most importantly, they will make time to answer your questions.

We hope to see you at this important session. To join in the conversation, you must register at: GO.UMD.EDU/IMGUPDATE. We will send you the Zoom link to join in on the day of the event.

If you have any questions, please contact us at (address? glao

“College football is run by a bunch of people concerned with saving their own ass, and the asses of others like them. If we make these people fear for their asses, they will do the right thing. It’s up to us to make the powers that be feel fear whenever they act morally wrong, not only when they do wrong and their team has recently lost to Rutgers.“

Hi GSG community! According to the newly proposed tax bill, there is a possibility that our tuition remission will be treated as taxable income. Yes, even though most of us are already taxed on stipends/fellowship and the tuition remission is not even a direct income we receive. Our friends at the School of Public Policy are planning a Call Congress Day today. I am attaching here some of their organizing documents for your reference. If you'd like to participate, or simply to stay informed, they should be helpful. The Graduate Studies in Interpreting and Translation GSO is raising funds. If anyone is inclined to contribute, it would be most appreciated. ---- The Translation and Interpreting Graduate Student Association at the University of Maryland (UMD) is raising funds to help current and future students in their T&I studies. We will purchase state-of-the-art teleconferencing equipment for UMD's Cassell Interpreting Lab. The needed upgrade will bring students and instructors closer together and expand the reach of the program across the globe. Our goal is $8,000 by 20 May (graduation day)! I hope that you will join us in meeting this ambitious goal. Thank you!
