On Wednesday, April 24th, the UMD Student Government Association will consider an Israel divestment resolution tied to the international BDS movement. J Street UMD strongly opposes the occupation and advocates for American and communal policy that reflects a commitment to the self-determination of Palestinians and Israelis. By failing to recognize Israel or differentiating between Israel proper and the Palestinian territories, we see the BDS movement as ultimately benefiting the policies of the right-wing in Israel. Consider signing this petition against UMD divestment: ter.ps/No2BDS2019.

Simultaneously, J Street UMD also believes that funds contributing to the settlement movement help perpetuate the occupation and blur the distinction between democratic Israel and the occupied territory beyond the Green Line. We believe the United States’ unconditional support for Israel must be re-evaluated, especially if annexation of the West Bank is codified.

J Street UMD will be hosting a debrief on Tuesday, April 30th, at 7:00 pm in Jimenez 0120, where we will address the complexities of the campus resolution and contemplate what formal annexation means for Israel’s future. Please join us.

“The United States should not want to see its taxpayer dollars used in any way for the support of activities that implement a decision to annex.”
