Busy 8 hours for the crew today. Multiple gas leaks and box alarms. TK812 operated as the RIT truck on the working fire dispatch to 84th Ave in New Carrollton. Once the fire was placed under control the crew was reassigned to perform overhaul to confirm full extinguishment and assist PGFD Fire Investigators in their investigation of the cause and origin of the fire.

***Working Apartment Fire***

At approximately 1145 hrs this morning stations from Prince George's County and Montgomery County were alerted for the high rise box with reports of people trapped.

The crew from E812 operated as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Engine. This team is a dedicated company responsible for firefighter rescue in the event of an emergency. E812 crew deployed their standpipe packs to have a dedicated line available for firefighter rescue.

The fire was extinguished by Company 844 and crews from both counties were able to complete searches of the building, ensure there was no fire extension beyond the apartment of origin, and perform ventilation with no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported.

***CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES***

TK812 was requested by PE851 to assist with ventilation of a commercial warehouse and office space due to elevated levels of carbon monoxide. Initial readings from PE851 were over 120 ppm due to a malfunctioning forklift. The occupants of the adjoining business were alerted by the activation of a carbon monoxide detector.

TK812 performed mechanical ventilation on this U-shaped warehouse with a separate internal office space area and the adjoining business.

First the crew isolated the warehouse floor area from the internal office space and lowered the roll up door to increase the effectiveness of the positive pressure. The exhaust opening was maximized to account for the large vertical head space in the warehouse area.

Once carbon monoxide readings were reduced to 0 ppm, fans were moved to the interior where the office space could be ventIlated using positive and negative pressure.

Simultaneously, the crew deployed a fan to the rear service hallway of the building to exhaust all carbon monoxide from the adjoining business.

Thanks to the activation of the carbon monoxide detector, the occupants were able to evacuate without any exposure effects.

Coordinated ventilation and continuous air monitoring allowed the employees to return to work once the environment was deemed safe.

Today the crew received personalized fitness and diet plans from the PGFD Fitness and Wellness Facility Coordinator Firefighter Charles Cranke. He listened to each members goals and customized a plan to help them achieve success.

This is one of the benefits offered to all fire department members in PGFD. Firefighter Cranke is certified in cross-fit, personal training, and nutrition with over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry. He has worked with athletes, first responders, rehabilitation patients, and fitness competitors.
